Genuine 1979 Volkswagen T2 Bay Window Devon Moonraker camper, right-hand drive and fitted with its original 2. 0-litre air-cooled engine.
A very attractive and well-preserved example finished in period green and white, retaining the character and many original features of the Devon Moonraker conversion, including its distinctive full-length elevating roof and period interior.
The camper has covered 140, 000 miles, supported by a substantial history file. It has been maintained and improved over many years.
Extensive professional body restoration was undertaken during 2015/ 16. This included corrosion repairs and repainting of the complete lower half, Wax-Oil treatment of inner panels, stone-chip protection to sills and arches and complete underbody protection. Further work included repainting of the upper section, welding where required around a rear window frame, removal and refitting of the glass, replacement rubber seals and stripping and repainting metal framework.
Invoices for this body restoration and protection alone total more than £7, 800.
The bodywork remains in excellent condition today, as can be seen from the photographs.
There is also an extensive documented mechanical history. Significant work includes a replacement clutch in 2019, for which the engine was removed and refitted; replacement of all four steering swivel ball joints; front brake calipers and brake-pipe work; steering pivot repairs; servicing and tappet adjustment; and electronic ignition fitted in 2024.
The original 2. 0-litre engine remains fitted and the documented five-digit odometer readings support the 140, 000 mileage.
The Devon conversion retains its lovely period character, with the distinctive elevating roof, striped roof canvas, cabinetry and camper interior. The roof provides considerably more space when raised and is one of the defining features of the Moonraker conversion.
The cab also remains pleasingly original in appearance rather than having been heavily modernised.
This isn't a newly assembled show vehicle but a genuine, usable 47-year-old Devon Moonraker which has been maintained and preserved over a long period with a comprehensive documented history with invoices available for inspection and is kept garaged at all times.
We have enjoyed many family holidays over the past ten years and has seen trips to the south of France, Corfu and Dubrovnik as well as many in the UK . My children are now grown up and it is with a heavy heart that we have made the decision to sell the van.
