Description
For sale is my 1995 Mercedes-Benz E320 Coupe, which I have owned since May 2024.
This is the later C124 fitted with the 3. 2-litre M104 straight-six petrol engine and automatic gearbox. It’s a lovely old Mercedes to drive and has the classic pillarless coupe design, cream leather interior and extensive wood trim.
The car is now over 30 years old, so I want to describe it accurately rather than pretend it is a concours example.
Mechanical history
Prior to my ownership, the previous owner advised that the car had been fully serviced and had received a replacement cylinder head and engine wiring loom. Unfortunately I don’t have invoices for this work, so I cannot document it as part of the service history; however, I do have photographs from when I purchased the car showing the old cylinder head and wiring loom, which will be supplied to the buyer.
During my ownership I have continued maintaining and improving the car, including:
* Full service including engine oil and filter
* Automatic transmission fluid changed
* Brake pipes attended to following previous MOT advisories
* Bilstein springs fitted with new spring cups
* Bosch passenger-side front window motor replaced
* Central locking vacuum pump replaced
* Fuel filler locking actuator replaced
* New tyres fitted
* Underside treated with Lanoguard
* Power Acoustik CP-71W touchscreen stereo fitted with wireless Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto
* Reversing camera fitted and displayed through the stereo
The central locking system is now functioning correctly and an earlier parasitic battery drain issue was resolved with replacement of the central locking pump.
Specification / features
It has a particularly nice period specification including cream leather upholstery, electric front seats, electric windows, electric sunroof, air conditioning/ climate control, extensive wood trim, alloy wheels and rear spoiler.
I’ve deliberately kept the interior looking relatively original despite adding modern CarPlay. The Power Acoustik unit is a single-DIN installation, so the dashboard hasn’t been cut about for a large modern double-DIN screen.
The car also retains its full-size spare wheel and original-style boot arrangement.
Condition
For its age, the car presents very well and still has a huge amount of character. The bodywork looks particularly good from a few feet away and the coupe shape still turns heads.
That said, this is a 31-year-old Mercedes and it is not being advertised as perfect. There are age-related marks and imperfections around the car, and the leather and steering wheel show wear consistent with its age and mileage.
I’d much rather a prospective buyer come and inspect it properly than describe it as immaculate.
The boot is generally very tidy, although there is some surface corrosion visible around parts of the spare-wheel well/ boot seams, as pictured. This hasn’t been hidden under fresh paint or underseal, so buyers can see exactly what they’re getting.
History
I acquired the car in May 2024 and the V5C records 8 former keepers.
It was declared new at first registration, rather than being a later imported vehicle.
I have accumulated photographs and information relating to the car during my ownership and will pass this on to the next owner.
Mileage: approx. 204, 000 miles
The mileage shouldn’t be viewed in isolation on one of these; the condition, maintenance and known work on the M104 are much more important. Nevertheless, I’ve stated it prominently so there are no surprises.
Overall
It’s becoming increasingly difficult to find usable C124 E320 Coupes that haven’t either deteriorated badly or been modified beyond recognition.
This one isn’t a museum piece, but it’s a very usable, presentable example with a fantastic specification, and I’ve spent considerable time and money maintaining and improving it during my ownership.
It would suit someone wanting a classic Mercedes that they can actually use and continue improving rather than something that needs to live permanently in a garage.
