Description
Historically, Jaguar’s greatest commercial success is the XJ. The first of its name swept the luxury saloon segment from its launch in 1968. Of insane beauty, it humiliated its rivals with its ride and handling that guaranteed exceptional comfort and roadholding, all at a competitively priced level. Restyled in 1973, it helped Jaguar survive the terrible crisis that hit the British automotive industry hard in the 1970s, before receiving a thorough revision in 1979 and then being replaced from 1986 by the XJ40. This latter model, after a rocky start, matured nicely, becoming the X300 in 1994 and then the X308 in 1997. The latter evolution owes its suffix to its new V8, designed with Ford, owner of Jaguar since 1989, but despite this cutting‑edge engine, the big Jaguar was technically dated, while the cabin offered neither the space nor the finish expected at this level. Everything changes with its successor, code‑named X350. Designed under the aegis of Geoff Lawson, who sadly passed away before launch, it surprised at its appearance at the Paris Motor Show in 2002 with its deliberately retro styling. This strategy had worked commercially on the X300 (but a little less so on the X308), so Ford decided to perpetuate it on the new XJ. The clientele greeted it rather coolly, as they were hoping for a decidedly modern look. Notably, the X350 employs aerospace‑derived technology: aluminium bonded‑riveted (and not welded as on the Audi A8), used for both bodywork and structure. This allows a 60% increase in torsional rigidity of the shell and a 40% reduction in weight.
