Basic, Better, Best – Pocket Multi-Tool Options

If there’s one thing anyone with a pulse loves, apart from classic cars of course, it’s multi-tools. They’re like an adult Kinder Surprise. A little pocket-dwelling treat full of shiny metal and general wonderment. The reality of owning said multi-tool dictates we’ll never remember we have it about our person when we need it, or we’ll leave it at home. But that’s not the point. The point, as with any little gadget, is that we feel satisfied merely knowing we own one. There’s probably some sort of psychology behind it. Probably.

Of course, you may be less forgetful than us, and you may actually buy one and then – heaven forbid – actually use it. In fact, we have compiled this list of three brilliant little tools based on their real-world usability. It’s all well and good having a swiss Army Knife that has a saw and a toaster and a ladle built into it, but you’re never going to use if for any of those things. No, the world of the humble multi-tool has been oversaturated with gimmicky things that we don’t need. We’re going back to basics here. Genuine, actual, useful multi-tool options that you will use. And if you’re not sure, then we have that covered, too. Buy the Basic option and then, if you use it a lot, upgrade to the Better, and so on and so forth. Job’s a good’un.

You know how we mentioned above that one problem is always leaving the chuffing thing at home? Well, overcome that and maximise your opportunities to use your multi-tool by treating yourself to this Tac9er device, which fits snugly in your wallet. Yup, it’s sized as per a standard debit or credit card, and thus can go in your wallet without issue. If that doesn’t motivate you to buy one, how about an asking price of a mere £14.98? It’s cheap as chips, the reviews are glowing and it’s incredibly versatile. Bottle opener, small rule, box cutter, nail file, slide blade, hex wrench and much more. All in something so small. Lovely.

Okay, okay, we might be slipping into the realms of a pocket knife here. But come on, you can’t talk about multi-tools and other pocket devices without mentioning Victorinox. They’ve been in the game since 1884, and they’re Swiss, which means quality. There are myriad options from the company’s extensive range, but we’ve highlighted the Victorinox Handyman because, well, just look at it! Twenty-four functions await, from the traditional and versatile blade through to a mini-saw, a corkscrew, flathead driver, scissors, pliers, file and even some tweezers. This little red beasty has it all. And from a brand you just know you can trust. That’s a lot of pocket-fit-kit for a mere fifty quid.

If you want the best in multi-tool technology, there is only one place to go and that’s to Leatherman. This brand make some seriously sturdy, properly versatile tools. Take this, for example. The Leatherman Surge, a sturdy pair of fine-nose pliers that also happen to have all manner of equipment built into them. Scissors? You got it. Screwdriver? Yes indeed. A diamond-coated file, bottle and can openers and of course, a 420HC blade? The Surge has it all. It even comes with a little pouch so you can carry it on your belt, always ready to go should you need to step in and be… handy. Is it cheap? No, of course not. It’s £150. But you get proper quality for that, and you get the bragging rights that come with owning a Leatherman. Never a bad thing.
