If you’ve been keeping up with our Basic, Better, Best series then you will no doubt have quite the collection of kit by this point and that means you need somewhere to keep it. It’s all well and good having a decent selection of tools to make working on your classic a doddle but it’s counter-productive if they’re strewn all over. We believe in a place for everything and everything in its place here at Car & Classic and so not only will a tidy workshop or garage make your life easier and more productive when it comes time to fettle but there’s a Feng Shui element to tool storage too, eliminating the frustration of lost spanners and misplaced 10mm sockets. We all know there’s nothing worse than being elbow deep in a project only to be scuppered by an essential but elusive thingamajig or oojamaflip.

That’s where tool boxes come in. Available in every size and configuration available and easily tailored to meet your individual requirements, whether that be a fully stocked workspace or a few essentials to get you started there’s tool storage to suit. So, join us dear reader in our quest to make piles of random tools on the workbench and jam jars full of screwdrivers a thing of the past with our pick of three tool storage solutions for any workspace.

A simple, classic tool box is all some of us need and this 19” Stanley is perfect but there are other sizes available should you wish. It’s sturdy enough for most, has metal latches rather than plastic ones that can potentially snap and has a removable tray so you can organise your gear effectively. It also features two extra compartments in the top for smaller items such as screws and electrical connectors. It’s a decent little tool box. We’ve had ours for years now.

For those who need a bit more tool storage space then the Modular Storage Compact Cart Set from Trend is a winner. Not only can you customise it to your specific needs but it also comes on wheels so it’s a great option for those whose classic car or bike is parked away from the house or garage. Simply fill it up with the tools you need and wheel it where it needs to go, eliminating those constant trips to the workshop. It’s a robust, adaptable unit with stackable storage and an extending handle and the removable dividers allow the boxes to be easily compartmentalised. Winner.

Teng Tools make some pretty nice kit and their 6 Drawer 8 Series Top Box is no exception. It’s certainly a more permanent solution to the other two on this list but if you have the space for it and your vehicle is in the vicinity of your workspace then it’s a great, quality option. It’s well made, has smooth ball bearing slides and is also fully lockable for the security conscious among you.

Whilst you can spend thousands of pounds on a full size, top spec tool cabinet (and if that’s what you want then go for it) these three options will certainly get you started and should be more than enough for the home mechanic. Combine all three and you’ll have a pretty decent tool storage solution. Now, where did we put that 10mm?
