QUEhang 2 in 1 Cup Holder – Product Review

You may be thinking, “seriously, you’re reviewing a cup holder?!”, but hear us out. Modern cars come with myriad nooks, crannies, compartments and pockets to stash your gear, not to mention at least a couple of cup holders dotted about the interior. But this isn’t Car & Modern, it’s Car & Classic, and classic cars don’t tend to have much provision for beverage stowage, which is a shame, because if you’re anything like us the compulsion for constant caffeine consumption is real, whether it be at home, at work, or in the car. We needed a solution to a common problem and so here we are, documenting our findings.

The fact of the matter is we Car & Classic lot spend a large proportion of time in our classics. We live and breath them. We wash them, restore them, love them, often curse them and drive them. A lot. Case in point is our Volvo 940 Turbo. It’s a project car but also a daily workhorse and as such it gets a lot of use, we spend a large amount of time inside of it. The problem is, it doesn’t have any cupholders, and we have cups that need holding, dammit! So, after a brief browse of that giant shop that is the Internet we settled on one – the hilariously overly-descriptive “QEUhang 2 in 1 Air Vent Phone Holder and Drink Holder for Car, Universal Cup Bottle Mount Bracket Stand”…

The Product

Yes it’s clearly generic, mass-produced Chinese fare but we liked the idea that it was multi-purpose, i.e. it will hold your drink, which was our priority. But, it will also hold your phone, ideal if you use your device for navigation, as we do, and you don’t want to stick anything to your windscreen. You know the type we mean, those suction cup style mounts that leave horrible, grubby marks on the glass, necessitating the need to polish your windscreen every few days. The holder attaches to the heater vent, doing away with all that faff and it’s incredibly adjustable too, making it a versatile option.

The Test

Packaged with various hooks we fitted the correct size ones to the back and affixed the thing to our central heater vent. The layout of the Volvo’s dash works in the holder’s favour as there is a shelf below that the base can rest on, thus alleviating some of the downward pressure that it may exert on the vent slats when it’s laden with an Americano and a smartphone. Having said that, we’re sure it would work fine in any car and the unit itself is light but feels sturdy. We loaded it up with a bottle full of water and attached our phone to the front mount, all without issue and headed for the open road.

The Result

Simply put, the QEUhang 2 in 1 Cup Holder works brilliantly. Being fully adjustable you can get it exactly where you want it and our iPhone and chosen beverage remained snugly in place when driving. The receptacle is big enough for most drinks needs, including the all-important McDonald’s coffee cup and it feels sturdy and robust enough to not have to worry about. It doesn’t damage the fins of the heater vent and there’s the added bonus of keeping your drinks warm with the heating on or cool if you’re fortunate enough to have air con.

The Verdict – 4 out of 5

We didn’t expect to be as impressed as we are. We like it so much, in fact, that we bought two of them, one for us and one for any passengers lucky enough to be along for the ride. It’s only seven quid after all. Is it the prettiest thing in the world? Not at all. Does it do exactly what we need it to, and do it well? Absolutely. An undeniable case of function over form.
