The Appeal

This Mercedes 250 SE has clearly been the subject of much care and attention to bring it up to its current standard. It has been restored and resprayed, with a photographic record of the works carried out accompanying the car. This shows the body being stripped back to bare metal, repaired and resprayed in its smart black over white colour scheme.

The car remains in excellent condition throughout, with its fantastic interior transporting its occupants right back to the 1960s, with its tan coloured vinyl upholstery and rare original Becker Mexico radio.

There’s enough chrome to keep polishing fans occupied, but Mercedes of this era also benefit form a reputation for engineering excellence and impressive longevity. This is the kind of car which, with the right care and attention, can keep on going indefinitely. And who wouldn’t want to drive one of these effortlessly stylish saloons… forever?

The Interior

Swinging open the door of this Mercedes 250 SE reveals a fantastically original 1960s interior. Tan vinyl upholstery suede has the seats and door cards, and remains in excellent condition throughout. There are very few signs of wear to be seen, with the driver’s seat base only showing very slight stretching. The door cards are very tidy, with undamaged smooth vinyl and spacious storage bins, as well as stylishly designed armrests.

Up above, the headlining is exceptionally well preserved, with no rips, tears or stains. And the carpets are clean and tidy throughout, thick pile overmats fill the footwells and add an air of luxury.

The driver is presented with the unmissable Mercedes steering wheel, which features a padded central boss and chrome horn ring. Behind this lies the dashboard, veneered in fine burr walnut and finished with smart chrome trim. The wood is in excellent condition and shows the warm patina of use.

Bold, clear gauges adorn the dashboard, as well as beautifully tactile switches and slider controls for the heating system. Sitting in pride of place in the middle of the dashboard is the wonderful original Becker Mexico radio, whose rich tones deserve to be warbling away as you waft down the road.

The Exterior

Photographs on record show this car’s restoration, including major bodywork attention and a full respray. It was clearly a thorough job, involving replacing panels and taking the body back to bare metal before the new paint was applied.

This paint remains in excellent order, with no reported issues, damage or scratches. The black over white colour combination really is very smart and stylish.

There is plenty of chrome trim, for the bumpers to the window surrounds, badges, handles and wheel trims. This all appears to be as well preserved as the rest of the car, and the window rubbers are also said to be similarly excellent.

Running on steel wheels with whitewall tires and colour matched hubcaps — to complement the black roof — the wheels of this Mercedes are things of beauty. The tyres are dated 2019 and there is a full size spare wheel in the boot.

Underneath, the body of this car remains in fine shape, with no reported damage or corrosion to worry about. Clearly it has been carefully stored and maintained since its restoration.

The Mechanics

Raising the vast bonnet of this Mercedes reveals the mighty straight-six petrol engine below, famous for being utterly dependable and long-lived. These old Mercedes have a reputation for being able to cover vast distances and survive in the most extreme of environments.

The engine bay appears to be very clean and tidy, with no reported oil or coolant leaks. The engine is said to start easily and idle happily, with a smooth gear change from the manual transmission. The brake pedal is said to feel reassuringly solid and there was no observed loss of brake fluid.

Summary

We think that this 250 SE is perhaps the ideal answer to the question ‘if you could have just one car, what would it be?’ And it ought to be so dependable that you need never buy another car ever again. Imagine that, unheard of in today’s throwaway society.

This well presented 250 SE would make a fine addition to any classic Mercedes enthusiast’s garage, and it would be an eminently classy way to get around.
