1973 Triumph GT6 MkIII MOD

Highlights

  • Fully restored in 2015 with receipts for £30,000
  • Pretty OId English White with black interior
  • 2L straight six with manual overdrive gearbox
  • Standard car with straight through exhaust
  • Good history file showing regular maintenance

The Appeal

Triumph’s torquey 2L straight six and a sleek hard top transformed the Spitfire into a miniature E-Type. The later cars got Michelotti-enhanced Kamm tail styling and are amongst the prettiest of the late era British sports cars.
All of which puts a good GT6 in a class of its own with few obvious alternatives. Which may explain their enduring appeal. This 1972 MkIII was restored in 2015 in Old English White with black interior and is one of the nicest we’ve seen in a while. The current keeper acquired it in 2021 and is only selling due to lack of use.
The history file shows invoices for £30,000, including that comprehensive rebuild. 10 years may have passed since but the car remains in very good order across the bodywork, paintwork, interior and mechanicals. There are a couple of very small points to note below, but those aside, if you fancy a characterful, engaging British GT, this one should be high on your list. With its straight through exhaust it will sound great too.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 2nd April 1973
  • Current keeper since October 2021
  • Always garaged and dry stored by current keeper
  • Only selling due to lack of use
  • Restored in 2015 with colour change from red to OEW
  • Paperwork and invoices totalling £30,000 of work
  • Supplied with some spares including original wheels, window surrounds and carburettors
  • Original wheels will require refurbishment

The Condition

  • Older restoration in Old English White that remains very well kept
  • The quality of the paintwork is obvious in the photos and remains in good order
  • There is a small crack around the offside headlight as shown in photos
  • Vendor reports that the paintwork is scratch free
  • Otherwise the arches, sills, panel edges and roof all appear in good order
  • Bodywork is well kept with no obvious deterioration following 2015 restoration
  • There is a small area of bubbling to the base of the offside front arch as shown
  • This could likely be easily remedied now before it worsens
  • We are told that the car has been undersealed and the underside presents well
  • Sits on smart Minilite-style Minator alloys in good order with only light marks
  • Matching HiFly tyres all round in good condition with decent remaining tread
  • Chromework is bright and appears free of tarnish or damage in photos
  • Glasswork has factory tint and appear unmisted and with no reported damage
  • Headlights and tail lights look good in photos with no damage or misting reported
  • Black vinyl interior with white piping in very good order with no obvious deterioration
  • Black seats are to factory correct design and appear well shaped with good bolsters
  • Black carpets through cabin and boot in very good order as shown
  • Protective ‘GT6’ mats fitted as shown
  • Dashboard veneer in good order with switchgear also presenting well
  • Unmodified interior with well kept dials, door cards and headlining
  • We have no reports of faults with electrics, lighting, switchgear or dials
  • Car is fitted with an aftermarket pop-up sunroof which appears in good order with tight seals

The Mechanics

  • 1,998cc Standard-Triumph straight six engine
  • 4spd manual gearbox with factory overdrive unit
  • Standard car with exception of straight through exhaust
  • Little used in recent years but regularly started whilst stored
  • Vendor reports that gearbox occasionally pops out of fourth gear when driving; the issue has not been diagnosed
  • Good history file including full restoration in 2015
  • No reported running or driving issues except as noted above
