The Appeal
The Porsche 550A RS Spyder is one of the most recognised competition cars of the 1950s, and well-executed recreations have long offered enthusiasts a way to savour the spirit of that iconic mid-engined roadster without the seven-figure outlay. This right-hand drive example, registered in 1985, is understood from its documentation to have been built by Banham Conversions, Paul Banham's well-regarded specialist operation, using a Skoda Estelle donor vehicle.
Finished in Porsche Cornflower Blue with a red interior and period-inspired racing livery, it has been dry stored throughout the current owner's tenure and is said by the vendor to have been maintained regardless of cost. The 1,174cc flat-four boxer engine was professionally rebuilt and has covered only around 550–600 miles since. The vendor describes the driving experience as raw, involving and analogue, sitting inches from the road with the flat-four audible behind, and states they would happily drive the car anywhere with confidence. As a registered Historic Vehicle, it is exempt from both MOT testing and road tax.
