The Appeal
The BiTurbo was Alessandro DeTomaso’s bid to tilt new purchase Maserati as a serious alternative to BMW. Mixing potent AM471 V6 engines, twin turbo chargers and hand-trimmed wood and leather luxury interiors delivered one of the most interesting GT and saloon ranges of the 80s and 90s.
These cars went through a bewildering number of name and specification changes. If you’re not familiar with this twisting chicanery then the 222 is the version introduced in 1988 with design titivation courtesy of Marcello Gandini. Just 1,156 were built over two years.
This 1989 222 220bhp 2L V6 is a highly original example in classic racing red and appears to have covered just 19,120 kms from new. In recent years it has been entrusted to a Maserati specialist for regular servicing irrespective of mileage. It comes to market with a recent service and long ITV that is valid to August 2027.
The car is complete, solid and certainly very usable. There are some cosmetic points for the buyer note in photos, but with that valid roadworthiness certificate it could be treated as a rolling restoration.
