The Appeal
The Volkswagen Golf GTi and its fellow front-wheel-drive contemporaries challenged everyone's perceptions of what a quick car looked like. Here was a sensible little family hatchback that could keep pace with the most expensive supercars on a tight road, in many cases outperform them, and be more fun to drive.
This 1991 example is a MkII GTi, which has been converted specifically for VW Golf Cup racing. The 16V engine has been tuned to approximately 180 hp, while as much weight has been stripped out of the Golf as possible.
The vendor says:
"It was not built as a show car, but as a proper race car. It was painted blue when converted to racing - the original colour was dark grey. The 16V GTI engine has been tuned to about 180hp. The suspension is stiff and sticks to the track very well as expected.

"The interior was stripped out and replaced with racing seats and a full roll cage. It is a no frills interior and won't win beauty contests. That is not what you are looking to win concourse de elegance with this car anyway, it's a racing machine not a beauty queen.
"The car drives very well and starts on the first try. It has a fantastic sound with the sports exhaust. Steering is solid and reacts quickly. It is front wheel drive so is a LOT of fun in the wet.

It is a great car that needs to be used more than we use it."
