The P38 was one of the biggest step changes to the Range Rover juggernaut we know today. Big, bulky, body and distinctly rugged, this was nevertheless the car that brought more creature comfort and luxury to its core, really kicking off the era of the true luxury SUV.
Being a true go-anywhere, do-anything machine, P38s rarely led a particularly easy life, and many were run into the ground by their owners, which means that our attention is always grabbed a good example. This one goes a little beyond that - it may well be amongst the finest examples of the much-loved 4x4 to hit Car & Classic.
This 1998 car has reportedly covered just 30,891 miles, and is a truly superb ambassador. It goes further still - the Epsom Green Metallic over the Ash Grey velour interior (Trim Code V), is a rare combo, especially with clear glasswork. We're informed that the velour seats retain their original shape and pile, the dashboard and door cards show their factory finish without the fading or cracking so common on these vehicles, and even the distinctive 1990s Land Rover 'smell' remains in its purposeful cabin.
A slightly more detailed walkaround reveals yet more to note: the survival of its factory details. Handwritten white inspection stickers applied during assembly at Solihull are still in place - the legendary 'white graffiti' - remain scattered across the car, markings that were never intended to last and are as rare as hen's teeth today. Part number labels are reported to remain on the boot liner, parcel shelf and fuse box, the reflective red steering wheel adjuster sticker is present, and even factory barcode labels on the keys survive. These are the hallmarks of a vehicle that has seen remarkably little trouble in its cherished life - and a rare survivor that defies its years.
