The Appeal
The Stratos, when it landed in 1973, looked like it had arrived from another planet. That Gandini’s chisel-nosed masterpiece was intended as a rally car made it seem, if anything, even more outlandish.
Until the Quattro arrived to spoil the party, the Stratos obliterated all comers. Just 492 were built, and they’re mostly in collections or available at suitably stratospheric prices. Thank goodness, then, for Hawk Cars. In 1984, it launched its HF3000 replica, which gave enthusiasts a dimensionally accurate and hugely capable alternative to the real thing. As many have found, even looking closely, you’ll struggle to tell the real and the evocation apart.
The current keeper of this fantastic Grp4 replica acquired the Hawk HF3000 kit in 2003 and completed its build in 2007 when it received SVA approval. It is fitted with an Alfa Romeo 3L V6 engine - appropriately designed by Ferrari engineer Giuseppe Busso - and boasts an extensive and impressive specification, which you can read about below.
Since completion, the seller has used this Hawk extensively, covering around 14,000 miles and including regular trips to Ireland, Scotland and Le Mans Classic. He reports that the car has been 100% reliable, even in quite extreme conditions. It is in good condition, but clearly designed as a car to use and enjoy rather than park up at shows. And quite right we think. He tells us that it has been serviced regularly - and recently in 2025 - and benefits from a long list of recent work described below. It comes to market with the added reassurance of a long, advisory-free MOT to July 2026.
The vendor says:
“Wherever you go, this car is a real head turner. This car always gets a huge amount of attention ! If you don't like talking to people about the car, it's not for you !
It is surprisingly easy to drive. It’s an amateur build , but local garages have stated they think it’s to a very high standard. It was never built to be anything other than a car to jump in and drive…
“It’s not concours and there are opportunities to tidy up if a better overall finish / look is important. It is very comfy on long journeys (partly seats, partly insulation, partly noise cancelling headphones.)”

With its astonishing Gandini lines, including those front and rear clamshells, this Stratos was only ever going to be magnificent. But the vendor’s careful attention to detail with the Group 4 yellow, black and blue livery really does take it to an extra level. We’re big fans of the full-length light display, the roof spoiler and, of course, those gold alloys. It is a really nicely detailed car, including the decals and roof vent.
Inside the cabin looks comfortable and equally well detailed. The bucket seats and Alcantara dash are in charcoal and the dashboard replicates the original’s style and features.

This Hawk may not have the original’s Dino-derived V6, but it's about as close as you can get. Plus, since it delivers considerably more power, there’s an argument to say it is better. Beneath the rear clamshell is Ferrari engineer Giuseppe Busso’s superb 3L V6, here in 24V from a 166 Alfa. Power is delivered via a 6-speed box.
This car was built by the vendor, an enthusiast who clearly has high standards, as you can see from the specification list above. The car was built to be used, rather than merely shown, and we’re told it has covered 14,000 miles since completion. The vendor tells us that it has been 100% reliable. Looking at the maintenance records, which we’ve summarised here, you can likely understand why. Highlights include regular servicing, including in 2025 prior to sale, and a recent cambelt change. There are no advisories on the current MOT.
