The Appeal
Much like the Willys Jeep upon which its design was based, the Land Rover’s potential as a military vehicle was recognised almost immediately upon launch in 1948. Within a year, the British Armed Forces were using them extensively, signalling the start of a relationship that has endured to the present day.
Ex-military examples hold a special appeal to collectors and we’re delighted to offer this former RAF Series I from 1953 - making it one of the early 86” versions. For fans of patina, this Land Rover has plenty to offer and we’re pleased to report that underneath the timeworn appearance are some very good bones. The vendor’s late father acquired the car in 2012 from a friend and it’s been dry-stored for at least the past decade so the chassis appears in great shape. With a passion for motorcycles, the vendor’s father did not drive the Land Rover often, storing it with their collection of classics until 2022, when it was sent away for some recommissioning work. Mechanically, all is reportedly in very good order as the engine, brakes and steering were comprehensively overhauled in 2022 by specialist Paul Mallen.

The Condition
- Currently fitted with aftermarket wheels although an OEM set (complete with tyres) accompanies the car
- Heavily patinated blue paintwork, with some evidence of Bronze Green underneath
- The alloy bodywork is commendably straight, with few notable dents
- The chassis appears very sound with no obvious issues
- The bulkhead has evidently undergone good welding repairs, with red lead primer added afterwards
- There is some slight corrosion apparent on the nearside of the bulkhead under the windscreen but this does not appear excessive
- Four auxiliary driving lamps mounted to the bumper
- All the galvanising presents well
- Tread plate applied to the front wing tops
- Canvas tilt fitted and sporting matching patina
- Retrofitted with later Land Rover indicators
- Central seat back missing
- The vinyl upholstery presents well with light wear only
The Mechanics
- 1,997 cc four-cylinder petrol engine
- In 2022, the engine was partially stripped and overhauled
- Four-speed manual gearbox
- Selectable low-range and four-wheel drive
- The vendor reports that the Land Rover is “lovely” to drive
- All presents well inside the engine compartment
