The Appeal

Ford’s Thunderbird ushered in the idea of the ‘personal luxury car,’ epitomising a roadster that, unlike its European rivals, was as comfortable as it was sporting. The ‘56 model year cars received a host of new features that make them especially sought-after.

This car features most, if not all, of them, including the ‘Continental’ exterior-mounted rear wheel, which increases boot space, the distinctive ‘porthole’ hardtop side windows and the 312CI 5.1L version of the Y Block V8. Matched to the Fordomatic auto as here, that powerplant is good for 225hp.

The car is said to be 100% matching numbers and also largely original, save for the repainted Peacock Blue paintwork, a new fuel tank and a replacement exhaust system. It certainly presents really well in photos and is a great representative for Frank Hershey and Bill Boyer’s era-defining car. It will be an eye-catching centrepiece of any collection.
