The Appeal
The Mercedes-Benz W114 series included some of the most elegant and understated four-door saloons ever designed. This particular 1971 250 Automatic is a left-hand drive example with a fascinating provenance, having been sold new to the Portuguese Government of Angola before escaping the country during the outbreak of war in 1975.
Its second keeper, Mr. Joao Abreu Goncalves, drove his family south through South West Africa (now Namibia) into South Africa, where both he and the Mercedes became well-known fixtures at the Lynnpark Green Grocer in Pretoria. Finished in the handsome MB304 Horizon Blau over black MB Tex upholstery, this pre-facelift model features rare factory 'American lights' and the distinctive wrap-around rear bumper and twin front bumper configuration reserved only for the 250 and 280 W114 series.
