The Appeal
Well here it is, the car that turned the world of light, nimble and simple two-seater roadsters on its head. Born just as that world seemed to have passed, the MX-5 thoroughly reinvigorated it and ushered in a plethora of copycats. It is no wonder that it’s fast-becoming a sought-after classic.
Despite the demand, early Mk1 MX-5s are surprisingly scarce, thanks largely to their driver-focused appeal. Here is a chance to bag one and discover what all the fuss is about. Enthusiasts will be pleased to note that it is the 1.6L model. While these cars lose a little in outright power to the 1.8L model, it’s a lighter and more free-revving motor that, for many, delivers a better driving experience.
This car is a Japanese-market Eunos Roadster that is now registered with the DVLA as an MX-5. The vendor tells us that it has been in the same family since 2007 and used in summer only and garaged throughout. We're told it is largely original, including the paintwork. The roof was replaced in the 2010s and there is a new battery. It is largely standard, save for lowered suspension. It presents well across the usual NA check areas and comes with a current MOT to May 2026, containing no structural advisories. There is scope to improve it, but perhaps first you’ll want to drive it. image.png1.59 MB

✓ We also check whether vehicles are recorded as being written off as part of an insurance total loss claim at the time an advert is placed on Car & Classic and we helpfully provide write-off category labels (Cat C/D/S/N) for your assistance. However, the presence or absence of a label does not guarantee the vehicle’s status and it is always worthwhile carrying out your own full vehicle history check before making an offer on a vehicle.
