The Appeal
In the early 1990s, whilst other manufacturers were chasing the simple two-seater format rebooted by the MX5, Toyota forged its own path. With the second-generation MR2, they conceived a mid-engined, mini-Ferrari.
Channelling some of the style of Panther’s stillborn Solo project with heavy influences from Maranello’s 328 delivered a car that was quite unlike anything else available at the time. That it was engaging and agile like the original MR2 and built exceptionally well certainly helped its case. Sales were never strong because those MX5 clones overly tempted buyers.
Today, the rare survivors have a very strong following. Likely, they’ll appreciate this 1993 car. It is the desirable European-market GTi-16 with the 160bhp version of Toyota’s twin-cam 2L engine. Looking attractive in mid-blue metallic, it is an enthusiast-owned car with a well-kept interior. We are told that everything works correctly, and the car runs well.
It has been regularly serviced and the shock absorbers and radiator were recently replaced. It comes to market with MOT to August 2025.
