The Appeal
The pretty Karmann Ghia is one of those classics with few peers, which may explain why it remained in production for so long. Pretty hand-assembled bodies and robust Beetle-based running gear give these cars a useful mix of exotic and easy-to-own.
This nicely detailed 1970 coupe arrived in the UK in 2012 and with the current enthusiast keeper in 2015. It presents well in red with chrome nudge bars, a lightly modified interior and a set of 15in Empis.
We’re told that the engine was reconditioned a few years after the vendor acquired it, with new barrels, pistons, and a clutch. The seller has serviced it himself, and it has always been garaged.
The 1,600cc twin-port engine is now equipped with a twin-choke Weber carburettor, a Bug Pack performance exhaust, and a short-shift gear change, making it a spirited driver. The vendor reports that it drives really well with plenty of power. The underside has been treated, and the floor pans are reported to be in good condition, while the paintwork presents well with only a few blisters noted. Supported by invoices for all work carried out, this is a well-cared-for Karmann Ghia in good order.
