SSK 128H is an exceptionally rare piece of motoring history. With less than 30 road-worthy examples left in its country of origin the chances of coming across an Austin 1800 Utility is incredibly low. The Austin 1800 Utility were only manufactured in BMCs factory in New South Wales Australia as a capacious yet compact utility vehicle. In a league of its own for utility vehicles, the 1800 Utility boasted heavy duty fully independent Hydrolastic fluid suspension, power disc brakes, and all synchromesh gearbox. While the 1800 Utility measured around 10inches shorter in total length compared to others in its class while having a very competitive 82. 3” bed on the rear. Priced at $2, 040 when new, the 1800 utility was a superb option that ‘really measures up to the job’ as published in the 1968 – ‘Power Farming and Better Farming Digest’.
This truly rare, matching numbers Austin 1800 MKii Utility began life in BMC Factory of New South Wales in Australia before being first registered in New Zealand with a farmer. Having had 3 owners in its first 28 years in New Zealand, a gentleman from East Sussex bought the car and kept it in the southern hemisphere where the car underwent a bare metal respray and a lead-free head conversion. In 1998 the gentleman imported the car to the UK and in its first year on UK soil and used it regularly. Upon importing the car, the East Sussex owner got in touch with the Landcrab Club of Australia who confirmed it was built at the end of 1969 at the Zetland factory. The Landcrab owners club international confirmed a Landcrab specialist restorer in Perth only knew if around Thirty road going examples in Australia as of 1998.
Recently, in 2021, the Austin 1800 MKii received a full exterior repaint ensuring it presents superbly well. Mechanically the car has been well maintained with a plethora of invoices within the comprehensive history file. With a steady documentation of the mileage throughout its life the 81, 500 miles displayed could very well be correct from new.
SKK 128H would make for a brilliant project for someone to take this exceptionally rare vehicle to the next level. The last owner sadly passed away around four years ago so the Austin has been parked up and unused. It will require some re-commissioning work and it will require some fairly extensive welding to the underside. We are selling the Austin and a running project.
