1968 MGC Roadster – 52, 225 miles from new | UK RHD | Rare example
A notably rare and highly usable six-cylinder MG, offering relaxed performance and long-distance touring capability, presented here in particularly well-preserved condition with just 52, 225 miles from new.
The MGC made its debut in October 1967, conceived as the successor to the Austin-Healey 3000 at a time when export demand for the latter was beginning to decline.
Although similar in appearance to the four-cylinder MGB, the MGC is altogether a different proposition. The distinctive bonnet power bulge hints at what lies beneath. Powered by the 3-litre straight-six engine, derived from the Austin 3 Litre saloon and producing around 145 bhp, it delivers a more refined and effortless driving experience.
With torsion bar front suspension and riding on 15-inch wheels, the MGC was produced in both Roadster and GT forms, with total production limited to just 8, 999 cars, broadly split between the two variants. As with many MGs of the period, the majority were exported. Only 1, 454 right-hand drive cars were supplied to the UK, of which approximately 550 were Roadsters, making this a notably rare model today.
In period, the MGC was often misunderstood, with contemporary road tests criticising its handling. Today, with modern tyre technology and revised tyre pressures, the driving characteristics are transformed. The MGC is now rightly appreciated as a capable and refined grand tourer, offering relaxed and effortless long-distance motoring.
This particular example was first registered in Surrey in May 1968 by The Moorlands Garage, Hindhead, before being supplied to its first owner, a local lady.
A remarkably well-preserved car, it presents in exceptional order and has clearly been sparingly used throughout its life. The accompanying records support the low recorded mileage of just 52, 225 at the time of writing.
Finished in its original colour of British Racing Green, the car is well specified with wire wheels, overdrive, a ‘pack-away’ hood and a luggage rack. Sensible upgrades include parabolic springs and power-assisted steering, both of which enhance the driving experience without detracting from its character.
The car is accompanied by an extensive history file, including the original green VE60 logbook, the correct driver’s handbook and a Heritage Certificate.
