1998 Bentley Continental R 400 Mulliner – 1 of 6 Built
Offered here is an exceptionally rare Bentley Continental R 400, one of approximately six examples produced exclusively for the Japanese market by Mulliner Park Ward.
This particular car is a left-hand drive example and presents in a highly individual factory specification, believed to be unique in this configuration. Unlike the standard Continental R, the R 400 features the more powerful 6. 75-litre turbocharged V8 derived from the Continental T, producing 400 hp and offering noticeably stronger performance characteristics.
The vehicle has covered approximately 32, 400 kilometres from new and remains in well-preserved overall condition. The car has recently received maintenance work, including new tyres, service work and replacement rear side windows. In addition, a modern Pioneer navigation and reversing camera system has been discreetly installed, together with DAB and FM functionality, improving usability while maintaining the car’s original character.
The interior presents beautifully with the traditional Bentley combination of leather, wood and craftsmanship expected from Mulliner-built examples of this era.
Mechanically, the vehicle is running and driving well. As common with many cars of this age and type, there are minor age-related oil seepages present around engine, transmission and suspension components, though no known functional issues are present. The car should therefore be viewed as an honest and usable collector’s example rather than a freshly restored concours vehicle.
With its extremely limited production numbers, left-hand drive configuration and Continental T-derived drivetrain, this Continental R 400 represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most unusual and seldom-seen Bentley derivatives of the late 1990s.
