Manufactured in Plumstead, London, between 1899 and 1966, a wide range of models were produced under the Matchless name, ranging from small two-strokes to 750cc four-stroke twins. Matchless had a long history of racing success; a Matchless ridden by Charlie Collier won the first single-cylinder race in the first Isle of Man TT in 1907. From late 1929 to 1933, the Silver Arrow had a cast-iron head monoblock side-valve, 400 cc, 18° V-twin with chain drive, designed by racer Charlie Collier.
This 1930 Matchless Silver Arrow 400cc twin has been part of a collection of motorcycles for many years. Restored by a previous owner to a very high standard, that has now mellowed with age, it has been used on many Vintage runs and steam fairs since completion. Purchased by the late owner for his collection, it has not been used for many years. A rare Matchless model today, with only a handful known to have survived, it is offered with an old-style V5, although recommissioning will be required. To be sold without reserve.
