Hexagon Classics are delighted to offer one of only 25 Bentley R Type cars with coachwork by Rolls-Royce’s subsidiary Park Ward. Walter Owen Bentley, MBE was an English engineer. W. O.'s motto was "To build a good car, a fast car, the best in class.” Our R Type Drophead Coupe is no exception.
First delivered to Mr Ben Walton of Stoney Street, Sutton on Ashfield, in April 1955, it enjoyed subsequent low ownership until being bought in 1970 where it remained in long term ownership until 2015.
The Bentley R Type features a 6-cylinder 4566 cc engine, with overhead inlets, side exhaust valves and twin SU carburettors. The brakes are hydraulic to the front and hydro-mechanical servo-assisted to the rear. Suspension is independent front, and semi-elliptic to the rear with adjustable dampers. Power output is estimated to be 132 bhp.
The Bentley underwent an extensive refurbishment with marque specialists in 2004, in which over £70, 000 was spent. The car has covered under 1000 miles since the work, Hexagon Classics have also commissioned significant recent expenditure with marque experts Padgett, at a sum of almost £30, 000.
The vehicle comes complete with its history file, invoices for works, restoration photographs, the original Park Ward Chassis specification sheet, and itemised sales ledger sheet, noting 16 gallons of petrol for the princely sum of £3 11s 4d. It also retains its valuable original number plate. This is a tremendous opportunity to purchase a rare motor car of quality.
