1941 Indian 741 Military Scout

Highlights

  • Has been featured in Classic Bike magazine
  • Now close to a 600cc capacity with electronic ignition
  • Really usable example that is ready to be enjoyed

The Appeal

As a compact, agile and comparatively simple form of transport, motorcycles naturally played a key role during the Second World War and were ideally suited to transporting messengers and infantrymen at speed over a variety of terrain. American motorcycle manufacturer Indian adapted their 500cc Scout for military use and we have here a fantastic example of one of these fascinating bikes.
Reportedly owned for a time by the founding member of the Indian Motorcycle Club of Great Britain and lately by talented engineers, this Indian really wears its history on its sleeve and you can observe how it has evolved over time to reflect its respective owners’ individual styles. The current owner has kept that gorgeous custom paint scheme but has endeavoured to make the bike as original as possible in other areas.
If you’re looking for a characterful bike with a fascinating history, then this 1941 741 Scout would be a great addition to your collection.

The History and Paperwork

  • Originally a military 500cc Scout
  • First UK registered in July 1989
  • Reportedly owned by the founder of the UK Indian Owners Club
  • It then belonged to a family of enthusiasts in mid-Wales and it was at this point that it featured in Classic Bike magazine (July 1998)
  • Still resides in Wales, now with a former aircraft engineer who has returned it to a more original state following it being a bobber for some years
  • Hand-written notes from previous owners detailing history and servicing
  • Collection of old MOT certificates
  • MOT and road tax exempt
  • Accompanied by the July 1998 edition of Classic Bike in which it is featured

The Condition

  • Custom paint finish
  • Gentle patination
  • Returned to near original condition
We really love the way this bike looks and it now has the appearance of an early post-war demobbed cruiser. The custom paint finish on the tank emulates civilian Scouts of the period accentuating some of the features of the famous Indian mascot and it really does look fantastic. We particularly like how the paintwork wears a pleasing level of patination. It would appear that it has worn this colour scheme for some time and its gently worn condition lends the bike an original and untouched feel that is really attractive.
We couldn’t see any damage or corrosion to the tank or indeed the frame, which we understand is in very good shape. The frame and mudguards are finished in a satin, perhaps almost matt black which really complements the general worn-in look. All of the light units look to be in good shape and we understand that they work as they should.
The black leather saddle looks to be a period piece and perfectly suits the character of the bike. The vendor informs us that they have endeavoured to make this Scout appear as original as possible with regard to specifications and, as the aforementioned 1999 magazine article shows, it was previously built as a bobber configuration. It now has more upright handlebars but looks every bit as purposeful as before. The black spoked wheels present well, as do the tyres which we understand are in good condition.

The Mechanics

  • 500cc V-twin - now closer to 600cc
  • Now fitted with electronic ignition
  • Runs and rides really well
The vendor informs us that this Indian continues to run exceedingly well and is used regularly throughout the summer months for rides around the beautiful Brecon Beacons.
We understand that a previous owner enhanced the 500cc V-twin by fitting Royal Enfield pistons and thereby increasing the overall capacity to near 600cc. The vendor, a retired aircraft engineer, carried out some recommissioning work on the Scout and also fitted electronic ignition.
It is now in fabulous mechanical order and the vendor reports no faults while the bike is in operation.

Summary

This is an excellent example of the fascinating 741 Military Scout. If you’re after a bike that is as rewarding to ride as it is to look at, then this Indian would be a fantastic proposition.
