1954 Norton 88 Dominator De Luxe

Highlights

  • Fully rebuilt example of ground-breaking bike
  • Low owner example in concours condition
  • High quality bike with innovative featherbed frame
  • Appears to be a rare, original UK market bike
  • Barely used since restoration completed

The Appeal

The original Model 7 Dominator earned its name by utilising Norton’s powerful new vertical twin. But it was the 88 Dominator Deluxe that really explored what this motor was capable of.
That was thanks to its innovative featherbed frame, so named because of its superlative ride. But it was not just comfortable, the new frame was strong and light and so maximised the performance of Norton’s engine.
The 88 went through a number of name changes but in 1954, when this gorgeous example was built, was called the 88 Dominator De Luxe. That slightly cumbersome name differentiated it from the earlier Model 7 and reflected the comfort of that new frame.
This one has been little used since a very high quality restoration. It is in immaculate condition and would grace any discerning collection.

The History and Paperwork

  • Rare UK market bike first registered here on 14th May 1954
  • DVLA records show two owners
  • Vendor states that he acquired it from the original owner, a farmer who owned it from new
  • Comprehensive restoration where we are told everything was rebuilt
  • Said to be in concours condition which the photographs confirm

The Condition

  • Restored to original specification and finished in fantastic dark grey colour
  • Well detailed bike with factory correct paintwork and trim
  • Chromework is bright with only light heat soak to downpipes detracting
  • Rubber trim and grips unmarked and presented in virtually ‘as new’ condition
  • Factory correct red highlights to chrome wire wheels
  • Tyres appear virtually new and show good tread
  • These were high quality factory bikes and this shows through in the Clear dials with no visible damage or deterioration
  • Lights present well with clear lenses and good retained colour

The Mechanics

  • 497cc vertical twin Norton air cooled OHV engine
  • 4spd chain driver gearbox
  • Innovative ‘featherbed’ frame
  • Capable of 95mph from its 29bhp engine
  • We are told that the mechanicals were fully rebuilt during restoration
