The Appeal
The Land Rover Series I needs little introduction as the vehicle that launched one of the most enduring motoring icons. First introduced in 1948, the Series I quickly gained a reputation as a rugged, go-anywhere machine, with the 88-inch wheelbase variant offering the ideal blend of practicality and manoeuvrability. Today, these early examples are revered for their utilitarian roots and as the foundation of the Land Rover legend.
This particular 1957 example stands apart for its remarkable originality and provenance. Ordered new from Hampstead Garage in Ardingly by Sir Henry Price - better known as the "fifty shilling tailor of Savile Row" - it was destined for gentle duties on his 500-acre estate and to the village post office. Finished in Bronze Green and specified with every factory extra, including the original deluxe interior, Smiths heater, lightweight removable hardtop, and locking differential, this Series I remains exactly as Land Rover intended. With just 7,042 miles covered and only four keepers - each known to the next- it has led a truly cherished life.
Maintained for 36 years by its second owner, Hampstead Garage’s own service engineer, this Series I was subject to meticulous upkeep, including full chassis repainting every decade. Passing from father to son and then onto the next keeper, it is said to have “never been worked off-road or left outside overnight”. Offered today complete with matching numbers, original registration, jack, tool kit, chrome hubcaps, Jaeger instruments, fly screens, and more, this time-warp Series I represents a rare opportunity for the discerning enthusiast or collector.
