The Appeal

Often the most wonderful things are the things in shortest supply. Like paintings by Renoir, eggs by Faberge and SS100s by Jaguar. Lyons built just 315 of his sleek, low sports car, and nearly 100 years on, demand to own one still far exceeds that limited supply. 
Step forward, Suffolk Sportscars. Widely regarded as the benchmark for classic evocations, the firm’s SS100 is so similar to the factory car that it resulted in a court case that forced the firm to close.
Just 400 Suffolk SS100s were built. This is chassis number 10235, and it was completed in 2016. It has covered less than 1,900 miles since in the hands of a single keeper, who is a retired aircraft engineer. It is finished in Jaguar Silver metallic with burgundy leather and is a truly lovely example. The array of neat Suffolk details is evident, including the branded chrome and ‘SS’ retro-style dials. 
As with all Suffolk recreations, this car is built on Jaguar running gear and takes its identity from an early 1962 MkII 2.4. The engine is the firm’s 4.2L XK straight six mated to a 4-speed fully synchromesh manual box. Usefully supplied with a voluntary MOT valid to October 2025 with no advisories, this is a beautiful example of a carefully wrought evocation of an equally beautiful car.

Many have tried to evoke the original SS100, most notably Panther with the J72, but compared to the Suffolk Sportscars model, they are obvious and notable failures. We challenge even the most fastidious SS100 enthusiast to spot the differences between this car and an original. Thanks to the attention to detail, right down to SS-branded chromework and dials, plus the dimensionally accurate GRP body, it is a tough ask. 
This car adds a fetching silver over burgundy colour scheme to that appeal. Thanks to its paltry sub 2,000-miles covered since completion, it is in very good order. There are a couple of minor trim marks and some light microblistering to note, but nothing requiring immediate attention.

Suffolk Sportscars’ attention to to detail extends to the running gear, which is all-Jaguar. This car, as with all of these evocations, has the 4.2L XK straight six engine mated to a 4spd fully synchromesh manual gearbox. All of the work was done by Suffolk, and the car has covered only 1,893 miles since completion. 
The joy of the SS100 evocation is that it has all the aesthetic appeal and great details of the original, but with considerably improved running gear that is still Jaguar-sourced. The engine and gearbox deliver more power and make progress easier, while the independent suspension and disc brakes provide a more engaging and surefooted drive. 
This car is said to run and drive very well and comes to market with the added reassurance of a voluntary MOT that contains no advisories. The car has barely covered 15 miles since the MOT test.
