The appeal

The Mini’s history is something that is by now well-known, Alec Issigonis’ humble economy car far outgrew and superseded any expectations put upon it, going on to become a true British icon. They are so popular that everyone has a story about or connection to these fantastic cars. They won the hearts and minds of a nation, rich and poor alike at a time of great uncertainty and fuel rationing due to the Suez crisis. Minis continue to enjoy an enthusiastic following to this day, with an equally large aftermarket support structure. 
Here we have a superb example of a comprehensively restored and beautifully finished original Mini. With some characterful touches and choice upgrades, it makes a compelling argument for itself...

The history and paperwork

The Interior

In the cabin of this Mini, you're struck by the fact that it's just as impressive as the finish of the exterior. The light green vinyl of the front and rear seats is in near-new condition, with the car not having done many miles since it’s rebuild. They perfectly match the green carpets, which are new items purchased during the restoration. The headlining is also in excellent condition, with the sunroof having also been restored back to its original condition. 
There is very little if anything at all inside the cabin on the Mini that is cause for concern – it truly is like stepping back into the 1960’s when you get inside, It even has that 'new car' smell!

The gear-lever is the early ‘magic wand’ type and is a joy to use as you slide through the gears. Similarly, the steering wheel is also a work of art with that beautiful red and gold gloss Morris ‘M’ in the centre. There is a floor starter button and a foot operated light switch. Interestingly, the indicator stalk on the steering column is the original item for the car. One note is that it would appear the holes for the interior light switches have been welded up.

Overall, the cabin of this Mini is simply a wonderful place to be. Tastefully finished to a very high standard, it's a unique and special vehicle.

The Exterior

The Mini has been restored with originality in mind and the exterior of the car looks just as it would have done when the owner purchased it in 1970. The external door hinges, swinging rear number plate holder, Mk1 grille and moustache surround, white steel wheels, ‘pull down’ door handles and the full-length fabric sunroof all add to the immense charm of this fantastic little car. 
We urge you to go and flick through the photo gallery to see just how good this endearing little car looks from every angle. A lot of work has gone into making this car look as good as it is, even down to the panel shut lines which are tight and uniform all round. Additional door-locks have also been added - mounted into the quarter panels, which have necessitated some slots to be cut into the B-pillars.

Underneath, the car presents in exceptionally clean and tidy condition, with the sills, floor pans, sub-frames and drivetrain elements all looking almost as-new.

The Mechanics

As part of the restoration process, the original engine was stripped, cleaned and rebuilt. Any parts that needed it were replaced, rebuilt and repainted. Since completion, the car has done very few miles – quietly waiting under cover in a sealed garage. That didn’t stop the car eagerly jumping into life with the classic sound of the A-Series unit barking to life through the little ‘pea shooter’ exhaust. This entrancing powerplant is a high-compression unit, denoted by the 'H' in the engine number.

A number of choice upgrades have been made, including replacing the dynamo with a more modern alternator and retro-fitting a remote brake servo. The fuel tank has also been upgraded to a 7.5 gallon unit, while the rear enjoys the benefits of adjustable camber brackets. Other modifications include Hi-Lo suspension heavy-duty adjustable front tie bars and a front disc-brake set-up, a welcome upgrade over the standard drums.

One thing the new owner may wish to address is that it appears to be missing a battery tie-down, although this is a simple issue to correct. The owner reports no unwanted noises or leaks, and no mechanical issues.

With the quality of the mechanical restoration work on display here, we're sure this captivating slice of 60s nostalgia will be providing smiles and joy galore for many more years to come!

Summary

As you can probably tell, we love this little car. There's good reason for that: the quality of the restoration, the love and care it has been afforded during that process and the way it is stored under it's own bespoke cover (which is included in the sale) show how cherished this vehicle is. Thanks to its unusual background, it's a very rare vehicle too, with exceptionally low miles and only three owners during its lifetime.
