Eagle eye viewers may recognise this vehicle from a previous auction here at Car & Classic. Unfortunately, due to factors concerning neither the seller nor the car, the previous sale was not able to complete.

The Appeal

What a great car! If you are looking to step into something British and from the 60s which can be used and enjoyed without any tinkering, this is the car for you! The seller has owned this 1968 Triumph Herald 13/60 for the past three years and, in that time, has completed approximately just over 300 miles. I think the phrase is little and often, which reflects how little the Herald has been used since 1968. 
The car has been well serviced and maintained (which is all backed up in the paperwork) since it hit the roads in 1968, whilst in the ownership of the three previous keepers. The original engine is in place and is thought to have never been rebuilt, and you can trace the mileage back through the previous MOT certificates, which date all the way back to 1971, when it had its first MOT test.

It really is worth looking through the paperwork images for the Triumph, and you will see from the MOT history, the car has only been used for one or two hundred miles each year for what seems like most of its life, and of course, as mentioned, there are all the previous MOT certificates to back this up.

There is even a notebook logging the date and mileage whenever something was spent on the car, such as putting fuel in, servicing or parts, and this runs from 1968 to 1994!.

The Interior

Inside the Triumph is like taking a step back to 1968. The car's interior is in excellent condition from front to back and top to bottom. The blue vinyl seats have been retrimmed at some point and are in excellent condition with no marks to point out and minimal signs of any wear. The rear seat and door cards are also in excellent condition, with no issues to point out. 
The dashboard has a black top with no cracks or splits; the wooden fascia is also in excellent order with no signs of the wood delaminating. The steering wheel has been replaced by a wooden rim wheel which is in good order, and the original one is in the boot should the new keeper wish to refit it. 

Just behind the steering wheel, the instruments are bright and clear and reported working as they should; the odometer shows the incredibly low mileage of 28,743 miles. All the switchgear looks in good condition, with just some of the white lettering missing in a couple of places. There is a radio fitted, which, when turned on, just gives an interference sound. This has never bothered the seller, so it has not been a concern.  
The previous keeper to the seller did replace the carpets; therefore, these are in excellent condition with no marks or issues to point out, and a set of embroidered Triumph mats protects these. Looking up at the headlining, this is nice and clean with no signs of sagging. Inside, the boot has the space wheel jack and wheel brace present and the boot floor is nice and clean with no areas for concern.  

The Exterior

Very British! As mentioned, the Wedgewood Blue exterior and underside received some restoration work in August 2003, and this was carried out by classic car restoration specialists MW Restorations. There was a further freshen-up to the Wedgwood Blue paintwork in 2019, and since then, it has been in dry storage.
Starting at the front, there are no noticeable stone chips to point out, the lights are free from any chips or cracks, and the chrome surrounds are in good order with minimal tarnishing. The bonnet aligns well and opens and closes as it should, with the catches on either side working correctly. 
Looking down the flanks of the Herald, the car is nice and straight with no dings or dents to point out. The doors look to align as they should with an equal panel gap around the edges. The chrome trim, which runs down the length of the car, is in good condition with no apparent dents in it. The windows all appear in good order, with any minor marks being age related, but nothing that jumps out at you. The seals also look in good condition with no signs of excessive shrinking. 
At the rear, the fins which complete the classic look of the Herald have the chrome trim in place, and the lights below are in good order, with no damage. The bumper has a plastic trim over it, like the front. The boot lid opens and closes as it should, and, like the rest of the panels, it aligns nicely. The wheels have been painted in cream and finished with the correct chrome hub caps, which are in good condition with just a small amount of surface corrosion. The tyres are not matching but have a good amount of tread remaining.  

The Mechanics

With just 28,743 miles covered, the 1,300 Triumph is in excellent order, and the paperwork would suggest that it has been well maintained throughout its life. With the flick of the key, the car fires up straight away just as it should and with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay. 
The Triumph is reported to pull well through the four-speed gearbox, and the change feels smooth and precise. The brakes bring the car to a stop, as you would expect, with no issues reported by the seller. 

Summary

This is an excellent opportunity for anyone wanting to own a British classic without the worry of having to do any work on it before they can enjoy it. This 1968 Triumph Herald 13/60 is running like a dream and is ready for its new keeper. It has extremely low mileage backed up with old MOT certificates. 

There is also a vast collection of invoices for parts replaced over the years. The original bill of sale is present, along with a notebook from the first keeper listing every time he put fuel in or had the car serviced. What is there not to love with this British classic?
