The Madison Boat Tail was a two-seater open tourer kit car produced between 1978 and 1990.
The car was designed by Neville Trickett and inspired by the 1930's Auburn Boat-tail Speedster and the Packard's of the time.
This Madison used the chassis and mechanicals from the Volkswagen Beetle as its donor car. The body and tub were made from GRP panels, making the car very light so the 1300cc VW engine provided more than enough performance.20211101_161406.jpg1.69 MB
THE HISTORY
Believed to be built in the late 80’s this striking car has covered only around 6,600 miles since conversion, the mechanics and running gear all being supplied by a 1969 VW Beetle.
There are some old MOTs, which may help to verify the mileage, but there is no supporting build paperwork or full specification of the car.20211101_175345.jpg2.25 MB
THE PAPERWORK
The V5 is present and there is paperwork to show the MOT exemption and Historic Vehicle registration, which has all been based on the 1969 VW Beetle donor car. Whether this constitutes the correct registration of the vehicle might need to be verified.
There are a number of MOT certificates that come with the car and there is one key.20211102_173051.jpg2.87 MB
THE INTERIOR
The interior certainly benefits from the installation of some very comfortable and well padded leather seats and, although a very basic interior it's all there and if the staining on the seats can be sorted out it will present very nicely.20211101_175331.jpg2.12 MB
THE EXTERIOR
The exterior cream bodywork is in fairly good shape with a few imperfections here and there but they tend to suit the look and feel of the car. Its panels generally look good with no major cracks, dents or damage with good shut lines for a kit car
The hood has been renewed by the previous owner along with the side screens and they all appear to fit well and should keep the occupants sheltered from the elements.
The wheels with their wire wheel baskets are all shown with relatively new rubber and are all in appealing condition with no major kerb damage evident.20211101_161504.jpg1.16 MB
THE MECHANICS
The engine looks in fine shape and the car reputedly starts, runs and stops with no obvious faults, but having said that the seller now strongly recommends a good going over before any road use as there may be faults which are not noted.OtH6RezjAitMRlceHmCIpK8divtzlvCU0dDWz6cs.jpeg3.21 MB
THE APPEAL
Certainly a rare sight on the roads, this kit car captures many attributes of the classic car driving experience with its dramatic looks and styling that, with VW mechanics and running gear, should be a very easy car to maintain and have some fun with.
