1971 Triumph GT6

Highlights

  • Fresh from ground up restoration
  • New old stock engine, yet to be run in
  • Almost as new condition

The Appeal

Triumph’s Michelotti-designed GT6 was born from the successful Le Mans programme in which a fibreglass coupe-bodied Spitfire achieved a 1st in class in 1965. Taking the 2 litre inline six from the Triumph Vitesse to provide the expected performance from a steel-bodied coupe, the GT6 was launched in 1966, seeing two further revisions to arrive at the kamm-tailed Mark III which we see here. To this day it remains a strikingly pretty design and is set off beautifully by eye-catching yellow paintwork.
But this isn’t just any Mark III GT6. This has been treated to a ground up restoration by a fastidious engineer who managed to source one of the few remaining original crate engines from the factory stock. So fresh it’s not even run in yet, this is a very rare opportunity to acquire a GT6 in almost as-new condition with a new interior and every moving part replaced. Indeed, the use of modern materials means that the quality of finish in some areas exceeds what would have been possible in the early seventies. So if you’re looking for a classic coupe and want a GT6 that is surely amongst the best available, then look no further.

The History and Paperwork

  • Registered new 19 April 1971
  • Acquired by current owner, a trained engineer, from an accomplished restorer who had started work
  • Built up from scratch using all new fixings and a new old stock engine
  • All moving parts replaced with new or refurbished items
  • New interior with embroidered ‘GT6 III’ seats
  • Large collection of invoices for the parts used in the build
  • SORN in the UK and duty has been paid for use in Europe
  • Registered in the owner’s name
  • The thrill for this engineer was in the build and, now trying to reduce his collection, he is putting it up for auction

The Interior

  • Fully retrimmed with many new parts
  • New dashboard
  • New seats, embroidered with GT6 III logo
Swing open the driver’s door and gaze in and you’re greeted with the sight of brand new seats embroidered with ‘GT6 III’ and piped in yellow to compliment the exterior hue. When you slide in behind the delightful three-spoked wood-rimmed steering wheel, you’re greeted with the sight of an all new dashboard in which all of the dials, buttons and switches work just as they should.
Under foot, the carpets are all new while up above, the headlining is about the only part that isn’t new, but the sunroof takes up most of the available real estate and is a pleasure to use on a sunny day. There isn’t currently a radio fitted, although there is space for one, which means that you just get to enjoy the sound of the fruity exhaust, no bad thing in our book.
The boot is also neatly trimmed with new carpet and conceals a brand new jack underneath as the owner thought that it would be wrong to supply a used item! In summary, the interior looks great and unless you’re keen for a radio, there’s nothing to do.

The Exterior

  • Freshly painted
  • Chrome very good
  • New wheels and tyres
If the colour isn’t sufficiently attention-grabbing then the condition surely will be as the car has covered barely 500 metres since receiving a bare metal respray. The bodywork had been removed, shot blasted and fully prepared by the previous owner and so the seller simply had to choose the colour and make sure that he could source all of the ancillary items such as lights and badges. This proved to be quite straightforward due to the high level of parts availability on these cars.
The paintwork is complemented by chrome which is also in very good condition, while the wheels and tyres are new. Underneath, it’s the same story with no sign of use. It’s almost box fresh!

The Mechanics

  • Brand new original engine
  • All other mechanical items new or refurbished
  • Still to be run in
The seller was very fortunate in having a connection who had acquired the Triumph factory remaining spares which included a number of brand new engines, still in their delivery crates. He was able to obtain one for his build which means that it’s as close to a new car as you’ll find, mechanically. He reports that all of the other mechanical items, including the shocks, bearings, brakes, etc. are all new.
So far, the car has seen just a short test drive but the seller reports that everything is in order: the engine starts and runs well, the car accelerates and stops well and it’s smooth through the gears with overdrive operating just as it should. In all, it’s ready to go.

Summary

Built from a freshly restored body and a fresh set of parts, this must be one of the best GT6’s out there.
