The Appeal
The Land Rover Series and now Defender range is the stuff of legends. Used on every continent and for almost every imaginable use, from ambulances, through search and rescue, to the school run the classic shape is instantly recognisable. Built with simplicity in mind to enable ease of maintenance and modification, they make fantastic vehicles no matter what you do with them.
This LWB Series IIA has several features that are left over from its use by the South African military; heavy duty front bumper, inlets for dual fuel tanks, side exit exhaust and a power supply panel (not connected) in the cab. The major benefit of being a recent import from South Africa is of course the climate it has been kept in - bone dry! As can be seen in the images this Land Rover is in excellent condition outside, inside and underneath. With the less common, larger 2600cc engine this is a fantastic example of a Series IIA and is not one to be missed.

When you climb up into the driver's seat of this Land Rover and look down the long bonnet with the off-road spare mounted in front of you, you feel that this car is ready for anything you could throw at it. With little concession made to luxury the utilitarian interior of the Land Rover is all business and the world wide success of the Series models and later the Defenders is testament to just how good these uniquely robust vehicles are.
Whilst there are some signs of wear, they are minor and the overall condition of the inside is very good, especially the paintwork.

The shape of a land rover is one of those that is recognised the world over and this LWB with its massive heavy duty front bumper and side exit exhaust certainly makes an impression. The wheels and trim are all in good condition and the paintwork is very good, with evidence of a full body-off respray as can be seen in the photos.
The Mechanics

The South African climate has been very kind to this Land Rover, the underside appears to be in very good condition as can be seen in the images. It starts and runs very well with the 2.6l engine giving a significant advantage over the much more common 2.25l variant.
Summary
In excellent condition both aesthetically and mechanically this is a brilliant example of a LWB Series IIA. Benefitting from being kept in a dry climate it is clearly a vehicle that has been well cared for. With rugged good-looks and performance to match it’s a car any Land Rover enthusiast would love.
