The Background

The Lotus Éclat is a sports car built from 1975 to 1982. It was based on the Elite but had a fastback bodystyle which offered more practicality with storage in the boot. This was largely due to the American market and their underwhelming response to the styling of the Elite.
The name ‘Éclat’, was altered for the American market and re-designated the Sprint; this was due to the Sprint moniker being used in the UK for a sportier version of the Esprit, Elite and Éclat.
This Sprint designation was an optional package and amounted to a sportier driving model thanks to a power steering delete, an oil cooler and twin exhaust system plus a five-speed gearbox and alloy wheels, as well as some styling details.

The History

This particular 1977 model Éclat spent the first 40 years or so of its life in Southern Ireland, exported to the original owner with the Sprint package in place as it came from the factory in Hethel.
Interestingly, it appears that this is the first Sprint to come off the production line and as far as is possible to tell one of only two remaining in the UK. It is a 3-owner car and has only covered 52k miles from new.
It appears to have been specified without the 1970s black full-length black stripe and, for obvious reasons (with the car being sent to Ireland), the black union jack on the back. However, like all Sprints, it was only available in white with black decals and a black interior.
It sports the optional five-speed gearbox and alloy wheels as well as black badges with the ‘S’ decal, which are unique to the Sprint model.
The current owner has been the custodian since 2018. Such is the car’s rarity and importance; it was invited by Lotus for the manufacturer’s 70th anniversary at Hethel where it took part in the on-track parade.

The Paperwork

Included with the car is a huge file of documentation that details all the historic work that has been done, plus old MOTs as well as information to confirm that it has only had three owners and was the first Sprint to come off the production line.
It also has two sets of keys, presented in very original condition, clean and complete with a beautiful patina that only enhances the overall appeal of this rare piece of British motoring history.
The V5C log book is present in the owner’s name.

The Interior

The interior of this Éclat is in exceptional condition, which is made even more amazing by the fact that it is totally original.
The black velour seats in both the front and back are in excellent condition with no rips or tears apart from a small repair on the back of the driver’s seat.
The steering wheel, gear lever, hand brake, carpets and door cards have also stood the test of time very well indeed. 
The dashboard is virtually unmarked with no chips, cracks, or crazing. The interior wood trim also looks great, showing little to no signs of aging at all. Minor downsides include a flaking chrome tray on the driver’s door and the ever so slightly saggy headlining.
All the electrical switchgear is in working order including the electric windows, lights, wipers, instruments and even the heated rear window. The only electrical fault to note would be the non-working boot light.

The Exterior

This car has never been restored and because of this, the bodywork shows the marks of age as to be expected of a forty-five-year-old vehicle.
The lines are nice and clean but there is some crazing to the fibreglass, most notably on the boot lid, rear valance, front bumper and doors. There are also a few minor scuffs but as far as is possible to tell has never had a significant repair.
All the original decals and badges are present as well as the brightwork, which is particularly hard to source. Overall, the car wears its age with pride.
Exterior glass is in great condition, with no chips on the windscreen, and the pop-up headlights work as they should.

The Mechanics

The mechanicals are in excellent order and because the car has such low mileage, it drives exactly as it should. 
The engine produces strong power and does not smoke or make any noises beyond the norm. Oil pressure is very strong with only a small drop, even on tickover, when the engine is nice and hot. The only fault to note would be a very small oil leak that is believed to be coming from the oil pressure gauge sender feed.
Gearbox and clutch operate particularly well for this model thanks to an overhaul of every aspect of the clutch workings including a new clutch plate, fork, pivot ball, cable and a refurbished clutch pulley. All of this work was carried out around 7,000 miles ago.
Interestingly, the Sprint package came with a twin exhaust, which increased power by 7%. The original mild steel one has been replaced by a twin stainless system producing that characteristic Lotus 907 soundtrack while maintaining the factory aesthetic.
The chassis is the original and in excellent condition, which is testimony to how well the car has been cared for over the years – it’s clearly been kept inside and away from the elements.

The Appeal

This is a remarkable example of the now incredibly rare Lotus Éclat. It stands out against others offered for sale because of its factory-fitted Sprint package, extremely low mileage and totally original condition. The interior is in particularly good order, as are the mechanical components and chassis.
Because of all this, the next owner will be getting not just a fantastic classic car that’s ready to be driven and enjoyed, but a true piece of British automotive history.
