The Appeal

Honda has established itself as a brand synonymous with technological excellence and innovation in its comparatively brief history.

Their dominance in the coveted world of motorsports was quickly established, and their subsequent success will come as no surprise to the vast numbers of satisfied owners.

In 1969, Honda announced what is recognised as the world's first mass-produced Superbike. The CB750 type was produced for 34 years, with the original incarnation using an air-cooled straight-four 736cc low compression four-cylinder engine that was suitable for cruising flexibility.

Virtuous by its build quality and element of sophistication, the CB750 provided a smooth ride, supported by disc brakes, excellent instrumentation, and straightforward maintenance.

Simply put, the CB750 changed the face of motorcycles forever.
1978 brought in a progressive upgrade of the CB750, badged as the F2, it was the most powerful engine of the SOHC powered CB750’s.

The bike utilised the distinctive KCB-1000 style four-in-one exhaust, larger intake valves, hotter cams and dual front discs to complement the eye-catching Comstar wheels.

Subject to a recent overhaul, including the carburettors, this original UK import had been kept in dry storage for 17 years when the current owner seized the opportunity and gifted it a new lease of life.

99% Complete and in very presentable condition, it rides well with no outstanding vices and retains its inherent reliability and build-quality attributes.

The History and Paperwork

 • Dry stored for 17 years
 • Recently re-commissioned
 • Carburettor and clutch overhaul
The bike is currently in the hands of a mechanically minded enthusiast, who has a passion for Japanese machinery, particularly admiring the bike's high technical specification and the retro design.

Hankering for SOHC four cylinder classic Japanese bikes, he obtained this 750 from a seller in Yorkshire around 6 months ago. Transported down to Hertfordshire as a non-runner, the previous owner had owned the bike for 17 years but never used it.

Over that period it is believed to have been kept in dry storage. Shortly after the current owner took ownership, the Honda was treated to a carb-rebuild and a tune-up, along with a clutch overhaul.

This brought the bike to life and proved to be a reliable and swift eye-catching cruiser. The owner has reluctantly put it up for auction after much contemplation, deciding that his motorcycling needs require something a little more current.
It has recent invoices, which covers brake and servicing parts, as well as a new set of clutch plates. It also comes with a current V5 and is MOT exempt, but did pass its last ticket less than 300 miles ago with no significant advisories.

The Interior

 • Good upholstery
 • Fully functional controls
The dials are fully legible with intact instrument glass, with a minor sheen of age noted on the bezels.

The main control panel displays light scratches but is still legible with fully functioning warning lights. The hand controls are good, with the metal and plastic components in decent shape with some signs of age.

The foot and rests controls are in very good condition. The moulded neoprene hand grips are good with minor wear but are fully operational, with brake levers shows typical paint wear in line with the age of the bike.

The two-stage saddle is well preserved, with a couple of minor blemishes noted on the seat material but the foam appears to be intact and retains a firmness.

The bike has a lockable storage box under the saddle, there is a little surface rust on the inner casing of the storage lid but otherwise in good shape. The plastic storage box shows wear but is intact with no evidence of water and fastens as expected.

The Exterior

 • Solid chassis
 • Original Comstar wheels
 • Well presented
The chassis is in good shape, with no immediate observations of damage noted, it appears to be solid and well coated with a decent black finish.

The metal tank and body fairing are in very good shape, with no significant signs of damage or wear, although the rear cowl back plate appears to be missing. The fuel locking cap opens and closes without effort.

The trim on the rear cowl is slightly worn but is complete. The mudguards are in very good shape, with the undersides in clean condition. The attractive blue paintwork goes some way into helping the bike's positive overall impression and displays a decent shiny lustre with no significant chips or marks.

The chrome components show minor signs of age in places, with light pitting most noticeable on the underside of the exhaust, horn covers and rear shocks but overall free from dents or ingrained corrosion.

All of the lenses and reflectors are in good shape, with no issues noted on the headlamp or its fitting. The Comstar wheels are in good condition, its aluminium rims and hollow steel spokes are free from any significant damage, with nothing much more than light age-related wear.

The Continental branded tyres are over 20 years old but have plenty of tread. The bike is missing its dual mirrors.

The Mechanics

 • New clutch plates
 • Rebuilt carburettors
 • Electric starter & kill switch
The bike starts up without hesitation when the electric starter is activated, and the unmistakable flutter of the motor sounds sturdy with no extraneous noises.

The owner states that it runs smoothly and without any issues. The ride is balanced, as evidenced by the dampers, which maintain a good absorbency with no thuds or sponginess, as confirmed by the owner.

The cam chain is well adjusted with no rattles noted. The gear change is said to be precise, with smooth linkages. The brake components and callipers are in good shape, with no scoring or significant damage observed on the discs, and are said to operate well with no fade or vibrations.

The battery appears to be a recent item and offers a good charge. No fluid leaks were noted on the day. All of the electrical components are all said to work, with no issues with the lighting. Both the kill switch and dual horns are said to be working perfectly.
Visually the engine components are in good condition, the block has a distinctive black casing which looks well preserved. The cooling fins are in largely intact with no significant damage noted, with some of the other engine components showing minor signs of age.

The chains and sprockets are in appear to have been well maintained. The ancillaries and wiring are all in tidy and in good condition. The Motad exhaust is nicely presented with no suggestions of leaks.

Summary

The CB750 offers a huge amount of potential, thanks to its substantial significance in motorcycling history.

The first incarnation of the CB750 models has created a flurry of interest amongst Japanese bike collectors, so logically, it's only a matter of time before these later, more powerful bikes follow suite.

However necessity is often the mother of invention, and the bike might be an ideal candidate to be converted into a cafe racer.

Either way, the Honda offers a solid structural and mechanical base for either a spruce up to make into a perfect stock cruiser or provides the right ingredients for a rebirth.
