Highlights
- Only of only 2,000 Spanish market R5 Copas built
- 93hp 1.4-litre engine and 5-speed manual transmission
- Extensively restored car in smart yellow with black bonnet
The Appeal
Named after the hard-fought one-make Copa Renault race series, this FASA-Renault-built high-performance R5 was essentially an Alpine/Gordini with a new name to get around trademark regulations. With its 1.4L 93hp engine and ultra-light weight, the nimble R5 can lay fair claim to being the original hot hatch because it was also launched two months before the Golf GTI Mk1.
Just 2,000 Copa R5s were built, of which just 500 are believed to remain. So this 1981 car is a rare gem, particularly so considering its carefully restored condition. Finished in yellow with matte black bonnet and those gorgeous alloys, it is a diminutive hatchback that looks as good as it goes.
Here is an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a well-presented example of one of the defining hot hatches of its generation.
