The VW Caddy has been in production for over 40 years and with over 3 million sold it’s been an international staple of VW’s lineup. This success is founded on the unique combination of adaptability, affordability and utility that few other vehicles have been able to match over such a long time. 

Originally launched in the USA and under the name VW rabbit, VW soon began production in other facilities around the world. The original Caddy was based on the MK1 Golf and bears the same iconic design up front making these originals some of the most desirable.

The caddy was bought from a friend of the current owner in 2013 who is somewhat of a collector of Caddy’s and he bought it from a local couple who used it for carrying their gardening tools around their garden. 

The current owner drove the pickup for a couple of years before beginning work on the vehicle as it was already in very good condition. However having access to good facilities and wanting to make it his own he completed a full top end engine rebuild and respray amongst many other things. The car has always been local to North Devon and it’s a reluctant sale by the vendor who is looking for someone who will appreciate this rather special Caddy.

This Caddy comes with extensive paperwork, including past MOTs, a large amount of service history and invoices for all of the modified parts. There is even a print out from a rolling road. 

Whilst the Caddy won’t win any prizes for the most luxurious interior it does have the classic 80’s retro design that's almost unbeatable for people of a certain generation. With colourful panels and trim combined with a few choice chromed parts and the square styling of the dash the inside of this caddy is a perfect match for the styling of the outside. 

This is one that knows how to make an impression. The stereo is missing, but with the slash-cut exhaust you really don’t need one. The upholstery and dash are generally in good condition with one small patch of wear to the drivers seat bolster as shown in the images.

As with the interior the exterior is also in fantastic condition. This is one well looked after car and it shows in every respect. The owner runs a spray shop, so as you would expect the paint work is stunning. 

Resprayed in Verde Bola, with Porsche wheels (also custom sprayed) and with the classic 80’s retro look this is a pickup that will make an impression wherever it goes.

As with the aesthetics this is a pickup that doesn’t disappoint. Any mechanical weaknesses have been addressed and coupled with careful ownership this has resulted in a Caddy that is mechanically great throughout. With an aftermarket carb, air filter, custom exhaust and wrapped manifolds the engine bay looks as good as the rest of the vehicle. 

Alongside these parts it benefits from having had a full top end rebuild, water pump, valves reseated, head skimmed, retimed, cam belt and clutch.

As to be expected this Caddy runs perfectly, sounds fantastic and with eight months MOT it’s ready for the road.

The original MKI Caddy has a retro style that's hard to beat and combined with some tasteful modifications and the stunning paint job it’s sure to make an impression wherever it goes. But the quality is more than skin deep; with low mileage and benefitting from a top end rebuild this one is also mechanically fantastic.
