The Appeal
The Mk2 Golf GTI achieved the almost unthinkable - it made an icon better. Much better. It matured, becoming more comfortable and relaxing, yet without sacrificing any of the immediacy and tactility of the original.
But, as enthusiasts know, there are Mk2 GTIs and there are Mk2 GTIs. For many, the one to have is the one that ticks three boxes - 16V power, big bumpers and three doors.
To that appealing combination, this car adds classic Tornado Red paintwork and BBS cross spokes. Dialing up the appeal are electric windows, a manual roof and optional power steering. It is in very good condition and pleasingly unmodified - only some braided fuel lines and a rorty Trackslag stainless steel exhaust vary from standard. Some very minor vandal damage earlier this year - a smashed windscreen and bonnet damage - mean it is registered as Cat N (see last three images in the gallery), but this work was repaired to a good standard as you can clearly see from the rest of the photos.
Recent work includes overhauling the cooling system. There is also a new battery and headlamp loom with a replacement heater matrix supplied with the car for the buyer to fit if they wish.
This is a great example of the superb Mk2 16V. As a low-keeper car with long MOT it looks tempting.
