1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Targa (964)

Highlights

  • Unrestored and standard example finished white
  • Iconic Targa ‘T Bar’ version of the Carrera 2
  • Classic air-cooled flat 6 cylinder 3.6-litre engine

The Appeal

The shape of a 911 hasn’t changed much since Ferdinand first penned it and that iconic shape makes it a firm favourite with car enthusiasts the world over. The 964 incarnation is one of the most memorable with the steeply raked front screen and large automatic rear spoiler. Often associated with the successful Stokebrokers and Estate Agents of the late 80s and early 90s, this car was the one to be seen in.

This was also the last variant to house the 3.6 flat 6 air-cooled motor before the 996 arrived in late 97. So, for many, this is one of the last ‘Proper’ Porsches. This one is as the factory intended and without any additions or restorations and therefore is a buy it and enjoy it opportunity.

The History and Paperwork

  • Several informative invoices for maintenance over the years
  • Official insurance valuations over the last couple of years
  • Original book pack with the car
Although it would appear that the car has not required any substantial restoration or repair, that is not to say the car has not been cared for. There are invoices dating a few years back that clearly show the time and effort that had been bestowed on it to keep it in fine fettle. Most invoices are itemised and show a good servicing regime. Whilst in the keep of the current owner there have been a couple of official valuations for insurance purposes and further invoices for maintenance.

The Interior

  • Genuine factory interior remains
  • Factory colour combination
  • Fully functioning electrically adjustable seat
The inside of a Porsche, like the outside, hasn’t altered a great deal over the years and this 1992 car is no exception. The seating position is still offset due to the incursion of the wheel well and arch into the floor space. The flat dash with big dials is also such a traditional thing and all the clocks and switches appear to still be doing their jobs admirably.

The driving seat still operates electrically as do the side windows. The interior trim is in a condition you’d expect from a car of this age and it isn’t showing any real signs of abuse or neglect. Naturally, there are points of wear but nothing that should make a new buyer concerned and everything looks good for its age.

The Exterior

  • Original white paint finish
  • No extensive restorations or accident repairs
  • Good clean undamaged alloy rims
  • Operational Targa roof section
The present guardian of this Porsche is confident that the car has not required any restoration or needed to have any accident repairs. The general quality of the exterior paint is good and only displays a few chips and one or two minor blemishes. The gloss is good and could be further enhanced with a professional polish. A set of genuine Porsche wheels set off the finished look particularly when the automatic rear spoiler is in the raised position. The spoiler pops up automatically at higher cruising speeds but that was not tested on the day.

The Mechanics

  • All standard 250 bhp 3.6 motor
  • Manual 5 speed transmission
  • Invoiced maintenance regime
This car possesses all that is desirable in a 911, the air-cooled flat 6 that howls and whooshes behind your head, the traditional 5-speed manual gearbox and that lid off Targa roof for ultimate posing. Not only has got all the right bits but it seems that all those bits have been looked after over the years.

The invoice file itemises jobs done and when, and it is always gratifying that the work is undertaken by at least a Porsche Specialist.

Summary

The sight and sound of an air-cooled Porsche are unmistakable and that’s why the brand has kept that signature shape deep within its designs, even today. This car, however, harks back to the golden age of the Porsche, when owning one was an indicator of your success and that you aspired to the good things in life.

The 964 still evokes those feelings and is regarded by many as representing Porsche’s true ethos in building an uncompromising sports car. This one seems ready to go with a good recent history and genuine originality. You really wouldn’t need to add much to your shopping list to relive those halcyon days, other than a loud tie, some red braces, shoulder pads and a great big mobile phone.
