The Harley Davidson Night Train was first launched in 1998, one of a series of specials that were designed to appeal to those looking for a more traditional customised hardtail look.  In fact the Night Train has its shock absorbers hidden underneath the transmission giving it a more supple ride whilst retaining hardtail looks.  With black power train, black trims, and all black fuel tank, it has a mean and moody look.  Six inch risers and drag bars give it the sinister street outlaw look. Only available in Europe the earlier bikes had 1,340cc  Evo engines, but in 2000 this was increased to 1,450cc, furnishing it with a more useful 67hp.  The 4 valve V Twin engine is linked to a five speed transmission that gives it a long legged cruising ability.  After 11 years in production the Night Train model was discontinued in 2009.

The Night Train offered here was first registered in May 2000, which means it has the improved 1,450cc engine. The Vendor is the second owner, having purchased the bike in 2004 when it had covered approximately 7,500 miles, the first owner having ridden it to Spain on a couple of occasions.  He has used it sparingly during the 17 years of ownership, mainly taking it on Harley Club road trips and charity runs.  Over the years he has improved the riding position and changed various parts that improve the overall look of the bike, giving it a bit more sparkle.  Now be offered as the Vendor feels he is not using it enough, mainly due to other bikes in his collection taking his attention.

There is a comprehensive folder of MOTs and bills, mainly from 2004 onwards.  There are receipts for parts that have been added such as the sissy bar, bars for throw-over saddlebags and risers that give the bike a more comfortable, less monkey-like riding position.

For a 21 year old bike it is in great shape showing it has been well cared for, and well stored when not in use.  The paintwork on the tank and frame is generally very good, with only some minor corrosion on the front mudguard supports as can be seen in the photos.  The chrome all shines well and shows minimal pitting.

The Vendor has added plenty of detail upgrades during his ownership as he felt the bike looked a little dark and gloomy with its stock all black appearance.  A custom clutch cover, short stem mirrors, a billet ally gear linkage, chrome horn cover, and billet foot pegs and gear change enhance the look of the bike. 

A couple of noticeable performance upgrades have also been added, including a Stage 1 tune, a Hypercharger intake and chrome carb diaphragm cap.  The bike sounds truly thunderous with an added Screaming Eagle silencer –which we can assure you does little to silence it!

The Harley was running well on the day we visited, although it had not been used for a couple of months.  The Vendor has just fitted a new petrol tank tap which was fitted just after our visit.  Although the current MOT runs until September 2021 he will take it for a fresh MOT prior to the sale to give the new owner extra peace of mind. The only fault we noticed was some age related cracking to the rear tyre that will need to be addressed at some stage soon.

The all black Night Train model was always intended to appeal to those who wanted a more hard core and menacing hardtail look, but without the comfort and handling compromises.  A greater success perhaps than Harley Davidson expected the long production run is a testament to its sales success.

The one to have is the larger engine version and this one has been further enhanced with plenty of performance upgrades.   Combined with the low mileage of this example then you have a winner –rarity, condition, looks and performance, an unbeatable combination!
