The Appeal
Developed under BMW’s ownership of Land Rover, the L322 Range Rover was very well received at launch and went on to be a great success for the brand. Indeed, Jeremy Clarkson once described his as ‘the best car in the world’, undoubtedly with a significant pause in the middle.
When well presented in black as this one is, it’s easy to see the attraction and the luxury interior has aged well too. Of course the sensible choice might be a diesel variant but, well, you only live once, and the lure of a supercharged 4.2 litre V8 is hard to resist.

This example has had just two owners from new who have evidently both made sure that it’s well looked after, while covering relatively few miles, all thought to be on the road. This means that it’s a fabulous opportunity for the next owner to enjoy many more miles of luxury SUV motoring.

The Interior

Opening the door reveals the simple but effective colour scheme of the cabin with black leather complimented by cream piping. The upholstery is all in great condition too, and the carpets show no signs of ever having seen muddy wellies. There are a couple of blemishes: some chips to the paint around the cupholder and some flaking of the paint around the rear heated seat switches but neither detract from the ambience of what is a very classy interior.
It’s well equipped, too: rear seat passengers get a pair of screens which are fed by a 6 DVD changer located in the boot, and there is also a 6 CD changer for the Harmon Kardon stereo and a DVD unit to power the factory satellite navigation system. The steering wheel is also heated which, from experience, we can assure you is more desirable than you might think.
To the rear, the split boot lid provides a handy seat for a picnic when folded down while the boot itself has a genuine Land Rover boot liner which has ensured that the carpet beneath has remained pristine. Underneath is a full sized spare wheel which looks to be unused and still wears the original tyre dated 2006. The original jack and tools are also present, as is the locking wheel nut key.

Finished in black, the car presents very well with unmarked wheels wearing a matching set of original fitment Continental Sportcontact tyres with good tread and dated 2018/9. On closer inspection, there are a few stone chips on the leading edge of the bonnet, a small scuff to the front bumper ahead of the offside wheel and a slight scratch to the adjacent wheel arch but certainly nothing that points to any off-roading. The rear wheel arches do look to have seen some paint at some stage above the bumper line as the passenger side shows a very slight paint run but you have to be really looking closely to notice it and unless you’re going to spend your time polishing the car then you’re unlikely to notice it.
Underneath, there is some light surface corrosion here and there but everything is straight and true and there’s no sign that the car’s considerable off-road capabilities have ever been tested. Overall, it’s worn very well for its age and the next owner could choose to rectify the small blemishes but we think it’s more likely that they will just choose to enjoy the car.

Under the bonnet looks very smart and when you turn the key there are no warning lights showing. On start up there is a very brief and fairly quiet belt squeal which the seller reports soon disappears and that from thereon in it’s exactly as you’d hope: effortless progress and a refined cruiser with no untoward noises.
The front brake discs do show a slight lip but the vendor informs us that the brakes remain effective and that it pulls up in a straight line. In short, it’s ready to go.
