The R232 managed the clever trick of looking both forward and backwards at the same time. With the former, there was a clever weight-saving aluminium spaceframe chassis to maximise the performance from the 4L M177 twin turbo V8. The return to classic 2+2 layout and a fabric roof, itself designed to lower centre of gravity and weight, recalled previous models like the R107 and R129.
The SL55 is arguably the pick of the R232 range because it brings in the planted 4MATIC AWD system to keep the 469bhp in check.
