The Appeal
After the catastrophic upheavals caused by World War II countries across the world were focussed on getting their economies back on their feet. Part of this process was getting the population mobile and mobilised in a no fuss, low-cost fashion. This movement spawned many iconic cars including the VW Beetle, Citroen 2CV, Fiat 500, and in Britain, the Morris Minor. A young designer called Alec Issigonis was set to work by Morris on a project called “Mosquito.” This project went on to become the Morris Minor. Issigonis summed up his design brief as aiming to create a car "the average man would take pleasure in owning, rather than feeling of it as something he'd been sentenced to." Whilst his work on the Minor was soon eclipsed by his innovative Mini, the Minor exhibited many of the same qualities and innovations as the later car.
This example appears to be a very honest and original car. It is not a concours car, but it has excellent bones and wouldn’t need much to elevate it to that sort of standard. What it is, however, is a highly useable and practical British classic that can be run and enjoyed on a minimal budget.Yd8ypQxWiT2tBFamrVeikvNPL11bXFiKxvsKsWb2.jpg674.62 KB
The History and Paperwork
This example rolled out of Cowley in the summer of 1957
The chassis number reveals it to be from the series III production run
The prefixes reveal it to be a right-hand drive two door saloon
They also reveal Ivory as its original paint hue
The original owner appears to have retained the car right up until 1985
The second owner kept the car until 2016 – a full 31 years
In 2016 the MOT records document a mileage of around 32,900 miles
The current owner acquired the car in 2022 to become just the fourth owner
The numerous MOTs show miniscule mileage progression
The earliest included from 1995 records a mileage of 31,962
There is a good level of paperwork on hand
This includes the V5 in the name of the owner
This classifies the Minor as an Historic Vehicle
As such the car is considered VED and MOT exempt in the UK
Numerous earlier MOTs in hard copy are present
The last recorded is advisory free from 2017 and documents 32,976 miles
An early Haynes manual is also included
There is documentation relating to the cherished number plate present
This includes an auction estimate allocating a value of £2,500 to the plate
An invoice is present from 2022 documenting a maintenance spend of £1,370
Work included a clutch replacement and gearbox refurbishment
Like “mass mobilisation” cars from other geographies, the Morris Minor went on to have a long production run being produced between 1948 and 1971. During that period over 1.6 million Morris Minors were built and sold. Like many cars of this era, however, the Minor is becoming an increasingly rare sight on our roads today. Its combination of simplicity, character and practicality make it a superb low-cost ownership proposition.
This example is notable for its originality and honesty. We can’t verify the mileage, of course, but the car’s condition doesn’t rule out its voracity. The interior appears highly original and entirely faithful to Issigonis’s original “big car interior in a small car” ethos. Complete with a valuable cherished registration, this Minor offers the perfect entre into the fascinating world of classic car ownership.
