The Appeal
Back in the early 70s a BMW convertible represented the last roll of the dice for a tradition of high end, hand-crafted cars from a small coterie of builders. One of them was Baur which had been creating open top BMWs for many years.
The 02 Baur was developed in response to changing American legislation which necessitated a ‘cabrio coach’ semi convertible style with reverse-rake B post. Each car was effectively hand-built and inevitably very expensive.
Originally fitted with the 1600cc engine, from 1971 the conversion was available for the higher powered 2litre 2002. Just 2,517 of these cars were built until 1975, with just 662 leaving the Baur factory in 1972 when this example was built.
It has clearly been recently extensively restored to a very high standard. The quality of the work oozes out of the photographs whether you are looking at exterior or interior shots. A Controle Technique certificate to October 2024 – with less than 100kms covered since the 2022 test – attests to its exquisite quality.
History and Paperwork
- VIN records confirm that this is a 1972 car, one of 662 built between January and December
- Acquired by the seller on 21st July 2021
- Appears to have bee restored some time immediately prior to 2022 judging by Controle Technique paperwork
- Original registration documents indicate it was sold new into Milan
- Controle Technique certificate valid to October 2024 with 42,453kms showing on test in 2022
- Vehicle registration document in seller’s name
The Condition
- Restored to a very high standard in attractive monotone colour scheme
- The work appears to have covered the chrome fittings and entirety of the interior
- Indications are that it has been little used since with no visible marks or wear around car
- Exterior panel fit is very good with clean lines and consistent panel gaps
- Paintwork finished to a very high standard and appears to have been a full bare metal respray
- Smart factory optional alloy wheels reconditioned with no visible marks
- Fabric and vinyl roof arrangement well kept and clearly fits very well
- Glasswork and fittings in good order including delicate rear windows
- Supplied with tonneau cover
- Interior in exquisite condition with high level of originality including wheel and radio
- Switchgear very well presented with no noticeable deterioration to this or trim fittings
- Checked cloth seats appear to have been retrimmed to a high standard and present as new
Admiring this 1972 Baur it is hard not to be impressed by the simplicity and style of the 2002 design, with its clever chrome accents and smart detailing like those lovely round rear lights. No doubt the quality of this car’s restoration – which appears to have been freshly completed – assists that impression. Panel and roof fit amongst other detailing attest to the high level of work.
It really is in quite remarkable condition and well specified with factory alloys and additional driving lights. Inside the story continues with a fabulous checked interior in ‘as new’ condition. The cabin appears highly original including the beautiful deep dish three spoke wheel and period radio.
This is a truly superb example of a brilliant 70s sports car.
The Mechanics
- Single carburettor 2litre 95bhp BMW engine

- Unfortunately at the time of writing we know little of the mechanical history of this car
- The photographs of the engine bay indicate that it has been overhauled
Dropping the more potent 2litre engine into the 02 followed demand from BMW’s American importers for a more powerful version. By coincidence a couple of BMW’s engineers had home built their own 02 2itre hot rods and the idea took flight.
It was an inspired decision because it finally exploited the capabilities of this entertaining rear drive sports car. This car is fitted with the single carburettor 95bhp version of this engine, mated to what appears to be a standard 4spd manual gearbox.
Regrettably we know little of the maintenance or service history of this car. However the photographs indicate attention to the engine bay and it seems reasonable to assume that with such a comprehensive restoration the mechanicals will also have received attention.
