The Appeal

The Porsche 911 was developed in the early 1960s as a direct replacement to the popular Porsche 356, albeit a much larger, more powerful, and more luxurious direct replacement. Making its grand debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963, the 911’s iconic shape, styling, and rear engine configuration took the world by storm, and remains a household name, even outside the realm of us petrolheads.

The 3.2 Carrera was introduced in 1984, and acted as a sort of replacement for the previously successful SC series 911s. Introducing a newer 3.2L flat-6, Porsche was able to achieve around 230 horsepower, and claimed the engine used 80% new parts versus its previous iteration.

This particular 911 Carrera Sport comes in Porsche’s factory paint to sample Iris Blue. Benefitting from the Sport package, it also received the iconic whale-tail spoiler, deeper-bolstered blue leather sports seats, and colour-matched centres to the original Fuchs alloys. According to the owner, it has received constant care and attention throughout their ownership and before, with a fair stack of invoices and receipts to prove it. As it currently sits, it’s in excellent condition and ready to be driven like the exceptional sports/grand tourer car that it is.

This Carrera Sport comes complete with a substantial history file documenting work completed by the previous and current owners. Under their care, it was very highly maintained, with invoices to prove, and a book full of stamps from dealerships and specialists. It remains in excellent running condition as it currently sits. Receipts show the car has had notable work completed as below:

Transmission (915 box) rebuild in 2013, all synchros and bearings replaces, full seals and gasket set; totalling £1,903.65
New clutch, crank shaft oil seal, flywheel sensors, roll bar drop links, starter motor, uprated 911 Turbo tie rods and ends, steering rack gaiters and spacers, track rod inner joint spacers totalling £2,928.56 in October 2018
Porsche Bilstein shocks fitted in rear, new CV boots, new rear anti roll bar drop links and bushes, and slight wheel refurbish in 2020 totalling £2,025.47

In addition to the above, the current owner states that new sports dampers have been fitted in the front and rear, as well as a full alignment performed by a suspension specialist in 2022. The current owner has also fitted new front brake pads and discs recently, and reports they stop excellently. The Porsche is further enhanced with a new Momo leather steering wheel and a classic wooden shift knob featuring a 911 logo. Originally Iris blue from Porsche through the paint to sample scheme, it has remained partially original, but has had a respray in the past, performed to a high standard.

Other changes include an updated fuse board PCB with tell-tale fusing, making future troubleshooting quick and easy. The headlights have been routed via this relayed board ensuring that the recently replaced indicator/headlight stalk is protected from carrying the headlight current for reliable operation into the future. In addition to this, there is a newer Blaupunkt period-style stereo with Bluetooth, DAB, USB, and phone audio connection, as well as an Alpine digital amplifier with 700W RMS in the front-boot, and uprated front speakers in the cab. While these modifications have been made, the owner and previous owners have made sure their installation has been performed with forethought that the next owner may want to revert back to original equipment, and as such, care has been taken to assure there are no unsightly holes or damage caused.

Porsche’s top offering at the time, the 911 was designed not only as a sportscar, but for luxury and comfort as well. This is very apparent when sat in this model, as the engineering presented in front of the driver is a work of mechanical art. The gauges are presented clearly, with big bold dials and ergonomics at the forefront. Still in exceptional condition, the dashboard and all the knobs, buttons, and sliders feel like they’re easy to reach and in the exact right position, perfectly at command of the driver.

The blue interior featured in this car has a certain timeless design feeling which perfectly suits the exterior and enhances the character of the car. The overall feel of the interior is heavy with period styling, but not overly gaudy or even remotely overbearing as such. It’s an elegance that is not often reflected in more modern cars as the trend has come away from colourful interiors; which is a real shame.

The overall condition of the interior is good to excellent. While there is very minor wear found on the driver’s and passenger’s seat, this does not at all detract from the overall feel of the vehicle. The interior trim is well composed, all present, and is in good condition. However, there is a bit of material on the headliner which needs some attention as it is removing itself a bit from the roof, this is commonly seen in this era of 911. The carpets are in good condition, if not a bit rough around the edges, but nothing beyond what we would consider normal for the age.

The front boot is in overall excellent state with no signs of corrosion, and no leaks or water damage seen.

The Exterior

The exterior of this 911 is where it really shows its character. The paint is very tidy apart from a few very small marks from the road as to be expected, and a small area of paint bubbling under the passenger’s side windshield as pictured. The trim and rubbers are all intact and in excellent usable condition. There are a couple of normal road use imperfections concentrated in the front, but nothing at all out of the ordinary. The paintwork itself is well polished, and does not show any real visible “spider webbing.” Even from a distance it shines bright with a deep metallic look, and plenty of gloss. The fitting of the panels and overall straightness of the body is indeed nearly perfect, especially considering the vehicle’s mileage. All of the badges, accents and details are in top condition. The glass itself is in great condition as well with only minor road marks. The owner states it is well looked after and only comes out of the garage in dry conditions.

The wiper trim, rubbers, grilles, and exterior plastics are all intact and in excellent condition for the age. The front and rear impact bumpers are tidy as well with no signs of damage or marks.

The original wheels are in incredible state, showing only very minor marks here and there, and are all intact with no signs of actual damage, and all centre caps present.

The underside is in a clean and cared for state, with only very little evidence of any surface corrosion at all, and no signs of set-in rust seen. There is some peeling paint on the anti-roll bars and some of the brackets, but none of this would concern us, as overall it is surprisingly clean for its age.

This Carrera is up to date on general maintenance and has had an overhaul of the 915 transmission in 2013. The current owner states the steering, braking, shifting, and acceleration all perform as to be expected for a Porsche of this year. It’s fit to please and ready to take touring.

Popping the rear bonnet open, the engine compartment is in good order for its age. The owner states there are no leaks, and no smoke or unusual noises to note. The transmission connects smoothly in all gears, and the engine pulls hard and sounds healthy. The owner also states the steering feels tight and responsive after the recent sports alignment, just as it should!

Summary

This is rare opportunity to own and drive a completely lovable and full-of-character Carrera Sport. All of its history, character, and current condition result in a 911 that is exciting yet comfortable as a grand tourer—fully ready to be driven at full-gallop cross-country— but just as at home at a classic car show.

The owner states the driving experience of the rebuilt 915 gearbox coupled with the refreshed and properly set up suspension and steering is exactly what classic 911 ownership is about. It is a unique and endearing car that would fit right into any collector’s garage. As a true sports car, it is also an excellent buy for any enthusiast who wishes to hit the open road in a beautiful and well-running Porsche, which sets itself apart from the usual 911 crowd, and feels like it can actually be driven on a daily basis.
