The Appeal
It was always going to be difficult for Alfa Romeo to follow up the stunning success of its original 105/115-series Spider convertible. On sale for almost three decades, the Spider was a star of film and screen, meaning the mid-nineties GTV and closely related Spider had a lot to live up to. Fortunately, with their compact wedge design and glorious roadholding, Millennial Spiders proved to be hugely popular across their own ten-year production cycle.
As befits its name, this Spider is finished in stunning black paint which shows very few signs of having covered almost 45,000 miles. The car’s exterior remains glossy and reflective, with tiny Pininfarina badges discreetly acknowledging the high-profile design studio responsible for this delightful design. A matching black canvas roof fits snugly and does surprisingly little to detract from the roof-down lines, while the characterful alloy wheels fitted to this particular vehicle are still in good condition.
Swing open one of those doors with their ruler-straight angled creases, and the cabin hosts black leather trim described by the vendor as being in “beautiful condition”, incorporating discreet Alfa Romeo badging below each head restraint. The interior as a whole has aged very well, honourably excepting the gearlever knob which displays considerable wear and has partially detached from its gaiter. A Pioneer stereo has been fitted below the trilogy of ancillary dials in the Alfa-branded dashboard, with evidence of minimal use in the carpeted luggage rack behind the front seats and the boot immediately behind it.
