Pre-facelift (= prettier) Mercedes 250/ 8 W114 Automatic sedan.
Swedish MOT test passed on 24 May 2017 (next not due until 31 May 2019).
Good project for the handy or well connected. Not sold for spares.
The 1971 250/ 8 was still the W114/ W115 premium model, and this car got:
a) Automatic transmission.
b) Power-assisted steering.
c) Self-seeking radio, the fancy original Blaupunkt (stereo cassette fitted in the glove compartment in 1983).
d) Power antenna (replaced with a fixed aerial, but power antennas can be found on Ebay).
e) Electric sunroof.
f) Independent vehicle heating.
g) Headrests (front seats).
h) Extra reverse light mounted below the rear bumper. The light was removed in 2014, but not disposed of.
i) Extra lights (two Hella).
j) Reel belts (all seats).
k) Rear-window heating.
l) Exterior rear-view mirrors.
Things done:
a) The engine runs well. It was restored 50, 000–100, 000 km (some 30, 000–60, 000 miles) ago, not much for a Mercedes. The carburettor was restored in October 2014. New choke fitted in July 2015. Also new sparks, oil, filter and other things.
b) New petrol lines/ pipes (October 2014).
c) New exhaust system (2014, stainless steel).
e) Most rust removed, including floor pans, wheel arches and new sills (2014). The garage said there is surface rust left.
f) Brakes overhauled (2014).
g) Petrol tank cleaned inside and sealed from outside (2014).
h) New stabilizers (2015).
i) New windshield washer pump (2016).
Things to do:
a) The propeller shaft needs a new rubber support and, possibly, bearing. It is not a big repair, but without it the shaft will cause vibrations, so the Mercedes should be repaired before any driving.
b) Interior: The seats need new fabric, and 5 m made after the original 005 "Zickzack" cognac cost me SEK 3975 (some EUR 420, GBP 315, or what the present rates are). The fabric is sold separately if you want it, but there are much cheaper alternatives. The new fabric is reported to be more durable to wear and light. The MB-Tex looks OK but could use some cleaning, like the carpets. The dashboard jacaranda veneer can be left as is, but I would replace the old varnish with new. The roof/ headliner looks good, but the lamps seem to need new bulbs.
c) Respray the body. Original factory colour code: 268 H (H = Herbert, G = Glasurit, separate suppliers of paint).
d) New sill chrome trims and clips cost me about SEK 1, 115 and will come with the car.
e) Extra light reflector wants repair or change. The headlights are fine.
f) The star mascot is at present kept in a separate box and comes with the car.
g) A rear-view mirror and plastic frame popped out when the case was hit. Keep them or buy new. Prices as quoted by MB-Classics: EUR 17. 85 for the mirror and EUR 8. 33 for the frame.
h) The grille needs one new horizontal moulding (EUR 5. 95) and clip/ s (EUR 0. 60 a piece). Prices as quoted by MB-Classics.
i) Take care of the rust left. If you cannot deal with rust you should consider another car.
I would like to supply this car´s service history, but cannot do that, so please do not ask for receipts, but you are welcome to inspect the car, which is in a garage close to the airport coach/ bus stop, Solna, Stockholm.
