Highlights
- Beautifully detailed Maxwell with many original features
- Mechanically sound example that runs and drives well
- Rare and robust four-seat tourer in good condition
The Appeal
Maxwell may be a motoring footnote today, but in the early 1910s, the firm founded with J P Morgan finance was selling 20,000 cars a year and nipping at the heels of Ford and Buick. Sales were propelled by a series of PR stunts designed to emphasise the marque’s durability, in particular its 4cyl 4.6-litre engine.
This Special Tourer is a reminder of what might have been had debt, mismanagement and competition not intervened. It was built in 1912 and is finished in dark green with a black leather interior. Throughout there are an array of original details, most notably the brass Maxwell-branded fittings. It arrived here in 2013 and has had just two UK keepers.
The vendor tells us that it is mechanically sound and that it runs and drives well. It is theoretically eligible for a wide range of historic motoring events. Or just enjoy a distinctive and interesting alternative to the more common vintage marques.
