The Appeal
Is there anything quite so quintessentially British as tootling down to the local pub on a sunny weekend day in a classic red MG TD? It’s a fabulous scene, yet it wouldn’t have been common when this pretty ‘53 car was new: of the 29,664 TDs built, only 1,656 were home-market, RHD examples like this one.
This very tidy TD is described by the vendor as one of the best available, and looking at the photos it’s hard to disagree. It is an older restoration that has been carefully looked after in the intervening years. The vendor acquired it in 2020 and tells us that it has always been dry stored. Since purchase, it has received an engine and gearbox overhaul. Both units were stripped, checked and rectified where needed. The box received new gaskets while the engine was fitted with replacement core plugs, a high flow water pump, new radiator and rear crankshaft oil seal converter kit. The car is said to be factory standard save for the useful addition of electronic ignition to improving starting and reliability. Other work has included a new roof, tonneauand side screens, supplied by well-regarded specialist The Don Trimming Company.
For those seeking a well-cared-for, largely original home market MG TD, this example warrants close attention.
The vendor says:
“The condition is probably one of the best in the country and drives really well for the technology of 73 years ago.”
