The Appeal
For post war buyers with the aspirations but not quite the budget for a Bentley MkVI there was Jaguar’s sculptural MKVII. And, admiring this well kept 1954 car, you’d have to wonder why it was worth paying more for the Crewe car.
Beside the looks, key to the car’s appeal was the first use of Jaguar’s XK engine in one of the firm’s saloon cars. Borrowed from the XK sports car it made the big four door a sprightly performer with 100mph claimed possible. That performance plus decent durability made this big saloon a surprising success on rally stages and race tracks.
The Mk VII was designed for the USA market, which is where this Birch Grey RHD car, with its factory-fitted 4spd MOD gearbox, headed when it was despatched in April 1954. It returned to the UK in 2016 and has had just three keepers in the intervening years.
It retains the Birch Grey paintwork, which is now matched with a mid grey leather cabin. The whole is in really good order, the paint and body presenting well and the interior retaining all the grandeur of these four wheeled gentleman’s clubs.
This Mk VII makes an interesting alternative to the more common 60s Jag saloons. It’s in good order and looks well cared for.
